About a month ago I went to put the saddle on my usually laid back, goofy, happy gelding and he pinned his ears at me - never done that before. Had the chiropractor out, she said he was sore in his loin area and she adjusted him and used infrared light on him. Checked the saddle fit because he is young and still filling out but it was fine. With finals and the holidays I gave him a month off. Came back to ride today and put the saddle on and he pinned his ears once then relaxed. Went to adjust the girth and he got super ****y. Continued to mess with his girth area and he pinned his ears a couple times more then stopped. Went to move him over by pushing my hand into his flank and he got super ****y again. Hopped on and rode for a bit, got off and messed with his girth area and he didn't care half as much, but still pretty cranky with his flank area. And the other day I was messing with his blanket on his shoulder area and he pinned his ears at me. I'm a little stumped - this guy is like a big golden retriever and rarely pins his ears. Ulcers? (Has a good appetite and in good body condition but ya never know.) Still sore? Crappy saddle fit? But you'd think after over a month off he'd be healed.. Any ideas? (Sorry for the book.) If you have questions just ask…

What type of pad are you using? Try wool or something natural maybe? Could be ulcers or?!? who knows.

I can't tell you for certain on what the issue is, but if you want to check saddle fit, I will be glad to send you info on how to check. Leaving a horse off for any length of time doesn't cure a saddle fit issue. I do this for a living, so glad to help you if I can. At least then you can eliminate one thing if it is or isn't! :)

Ulcers will make one cinchy.  Get some Aloevera juice and give once before feeding (.about 15 minutes) morning and night.  If it's ulcers you should  see a difference in 7 to 10 days.

Can you mix it with grain?

Mine is body sore and has EPM. He has a very mild case and has very subtle signs.

I would check for ulcers as well.

I'm using a five star pad :) Only kind I'll use!
wimpyb - The lady I had out said his saddle fits fine and I've checked it myself (I know the basics on where/what to check) but I would loooove for you to send me some info. Maybe I'm missing something!
He is five - slow to mature which is why the saddle could be the issue.
I'll check into EPM as well but I don't think that's it.

I talked to my mom tonight (she's a vet) and she said to watch it but also said he may just be being a jerk. I recently moved him to a new boarding facility and he's not at the bottom of the pecking order anymore so maybe thinks he's pretty hotsy totsy and can pull stuff with me. Thanks for all the responses!

Yup you can mix it with grain! My friends horse is on it. I'll add some to his grain and see what happens!

I have the most laid back brokest mare in the world who started acting like this a few months ago too and after doing some googling and reading on here I believe she might have PSSM. There is a list of about 10 symptoms and she mildly fit about 8 of the 10 so it might be something you can look into. My mare is 10 and has never been cinchy one day of her life even when she was going through some major chiro problems so I'm really looking into the PSSM thing now.

Maybe go to the vet and do a themoscam to see if there are any lamness issues.
Then ifmthere are no lamness issues, then go to ulcers, emp, pssm. I would not think that if your horse is 5 or 6 its prime time for hocks to,fuse, maybe stifles get sore. When my horse a vet told m my horse, was not sore enough for,his hocks to be fusing she told me ulcers. But it was his hocks after i carried to,a vet who did a thermoscan it really lit the scan then we did xray. The vet injected him gave me instruction on pain relief and told me to ride him and in a couple of weeks i am going to do a shock wave. But while i was riding him in my custom fitted saddle that i had for over a year, he started getting sore in his back where the saddle goes, like the saddle did not fit i used several pads to no avail, he got better on the biofit pad and when the show, season was over, i stopped after i went to nbha world and went from balking to walking in with the biofit and giving previcox and banimine for a week. That is how sore he was. I turned out for,the last month and he has slowly improved.
