Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | My vet has been on me about vaccinating the dogs. I've never vaccinated them(Charlie got his puppy shots and who knows about Marty) but I was looking around at TSC today and saw dog vaccines should I vaccinate them? Neither of them ever go anywhere except to the vet if they have to. And I'm wondering if I do vaccinate them...is it cheaper to take them to the vet and do it or buy it and do it myself? I've never done a dog but I've done horses so it can't be that hard right? |

Location: Usually on my horse | I do not vaccinate past the first puppy shots. I truly believe puppies need the shots in their first year of life....and that is it. As a society in general, we over vaccinate our animals. The only shot they get is rabies and they are tested for heart worm every year. Flame away but my my dogs have all been healthy and disease free. I just lost my lab last week. She was 15 and lived with me her whole life. |

Location: on my horse | I vaccinate my dog and I do it myself just keep an eye on where you get your vaccine from to make sure they were properly stored. The only reason I vaccinate is because I have one dog that goes everywhere with me and is a therapy dog so gets exposed to a lot of stuff and goes a lot more places than the average dog. I do her, and then I do everybody else because I don't want her carrying it home to them. |

Location: The end of the Earth, SE AR | In many states, vaccinating for rabies in the law. In AR, there has been a huge increase in rabid skunks and bats for the past year. Not only is it important to vaccinate for rabies for the dog's sake, its also important for your sake and the sake of other animals. One woman had her dog turn on her and bite her and it came up positive for rabies. She had to take shots as did everyone in her household. All her other dogs and cats were quarrentined, and the barn cats who could not be handled and caught were trapped and euthanized If you aren't concerned about your life, you also have to realize that if you send a skunk in for rabies testing and the skunk may have been in contact with your dog and the skunk comes up rabies positive, your dog will have to be quarrentined for 6 months.

| I do the puppy vaccine and rabies there after. I have a dachshund cross that had his puppy vaccines and his yearly rabies lived to be 14 years old. Healthy all his life. I have talked to several vets and seen reports that said we are OVER vaccinating our pets. God gave them an immune system. Now if I had one that ran the roads and wrestled wild animals maybe I would think differently. |

I think it's cheaper to do it yourself, but my question is if you do it yourself... how can you prove they are up to date if you go and get their nails clipped at a groomers(since they usually require UTD dogs), or are at your dog shows etc.?

Location: Texas | Have to have Rabies here, and I think legally the vet has to give the rabies.
As far as parvo vacc. My dogs get all of their puppy shots and then they are done, we don't do the annual booster for parvo. We have never had a grown dog get parvo after they were fully vacc. as a puppy, and our oldest lived to 18. I did see one case at the clinic that was completely vaccinated by a vet and got parvo at 2 years old (it was odd enough that the E clinic did exploratory surgery on him before doing a parvo test). I have seen plenty that got parvo after getting the feed store vaccines though.
After all of their initial shots, ours only get the rabies when they are due for them. |

| Around here(FL), rabies is required to have and a vet has to do it. I vaccinate mine, used to buy em from tractor supply but now just found out they don't take care of them properly so I'll order online from a vet site. I take mine to dog parks, dog beaches, festivals and feel it's necessary because a lot of people don't take care of their animals properly and I don't want them to get sick. If you can vaccinate a horse, dog is no problem, just google a subq shot, it's right under the skin and pretty easy. |

| Rabies is by state law.
Bordatella (sp?) aka Kennel Cough is mandated by boarding facilities, meaning they might require it. I highly recommend it if you travel with dogs as it is HIGHLY contagious and is crappy to treat after they have it.
Puppy shots are the initial Bordatella and several other contagious diseases (usually including some ratio of: Distemper, parainfluenza, lepto, parvo, and coronavirus) combined to give them the initial boost to the immune system. These are usually given twice before adult age is reached.
I update yearly with vaccines as I end up boarding mine a couple times a year and travel quite a bit with them too ...
