Location: Small Town Iowa | ...that seems like every year you have to start from scratch with? My mare, god bless her, it's like I'm starting a colt again from the ground up. She checks out fine with the vet and teeth are in good shape, but she is just so darn stubborn and lazy. And then when you do ask her to work she wants to be a little bucky because she's very happy being a pasture pet. Last night it took almost an hour for her just to lope circle one direction. My patience was wearing very thin with this chick. Crazy part is that last year I ran her from May until November. All I can say is I hope she turns out to be a good horse becuase this mess is getting old...FAST!! Sorry, I just had to vent about it. |

Location: MD | I feel your pain. My horse in my display is a horse that has to be ridden regularly or I know I'm going to have about 2 weeks worth of sass getting him back into working order. Granted he still does things but getting him to remember how to do it without a 'tude isn't happening until his back "on schedule."
Thankfully for him he's about the most fun horse I've ever swung a leg over and he is my other horses adoptive big brother and protector so he has a permanent place on my feed bill :) |

Location: Small Town Iowa | I don't think I could ever part with her. But I was riding her regular and then it got close to my wedding so she's had about 2 weeks off. And she knows it, but she thinks she knows it better I guess. LOL!!! And she is fun to ride. When she isn't giving me attitude she is fun to ride and and once she's in to her routine she doesn't give me any fits. It's just at the beginning. Ugh, horses some days.  |

Mine is exactly the same except too much jam instead of lazy..... I rode her Mar-Nov last year. Started riding her last weekend oh goodness. I think I loped for like an hour straight last night just trying to get her head out of the clouds...like a colt!! My butt is so sore, LOL!She will be 7 in July....how old is yours? I just hope I can get mine back in running shape by mid June..I feel your pain! |

She will work but she's just lazy and if I spank her a little with the whip she throws her back end up in the air in protest. If I get after her it just turns into a fight. So I've finally come to the point that she is lunged long and hard and really made to hustle on the ground for a while. I think that's just what I have to do I guess. Treat her like a colt. I am so sore though, who needs yoga when you have a brat mare. LOL!!! |

Yes!! LOL we don't have to go the gym anyway!
Mine is more elevated in the front end than the back, but it sounds very similar..many many circles...LOL..hang in there!! |

Location: Minnesota | My gelding is like this. He's had way more time off then I care to admit. He doesn't need to be rode every day but darn need to keep him sane. He spooks at everything and it takes time and time again for him to realize that mailbox is not chasing us or that garbage can isn't rolling behind us or that butterfly isn't going to eat him. Repetition is the name of his game and he's had too much time off. |

whew and i thought only my idiot 6 yr old was like this! she pretty much had winter off due to weather and no indoor. She does exactly like your horse. Ive had her 2 years and this year is like im starting over again. Weve forgotten how to lope and if you ask she bucks.So went back to working on getting her collected again and not bucking! Shes also the type you argue with her she gets ****ed! |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I had a 6yr old that HAD to be rode at least 4 times a week or it was like starting over with a baby. When it would rain for a week and she wouldn't get rode it was like being on a 2yr old. I put up with it for 2yrs. One of the 2 she spent with a trainer and trainer had the same problem with her the whole year she was there. I got tired of dealing with it becUse it was physically impossible for her to be rode that much at my house. I had 7 horses at the time and I was in collage classes in the mornings and worked until 530. Sold her to someone that can ride every day. |

Honestly none of my horses are like that & most of them are 2-6 years old. They've been off pretty much from November up to a couple weeks ago & every single one of them has rode off quiet & well behaved with no fuss over anything. Mine always seem to benefit from the break,they come back fresh and ready to work again.
Once I got her through the brat phase last year she rode like a gelding every time all summer long. And I was not consistent because of my work and call schedule. So I got to ride about 3x's a week at the least. And I have no indoor or even an outdoor for that matter. So I haven't been able to stay on her all winter either. Granted it's not as bad as it was last year because she got me good and ended up breaking my collarbone. I'm definitely more cautious. But basically what I'm saying is I'm just plain jealous of your post about not having brat horses..lol. That is all |

Ditto. I think mine is so eager to DO something that he acts like a perfect gentleman. I always count my blessing twice wih my main man. Gosh I love him. |
