I can't believe that I'm doing this... But here is my run from this past weekend. Right now I'm only doing Playdays, that's what I grew up doing and really haven't had a good enough horse (in my mind) to try and run at jackpots and win money doing it.

The 3rd barrel isn't that great, not sure if I didn't rate her soon enough or what. My sister is yelling 2 hands because I had noticed in other video's that I staying one handed until I got to the 2nd barrel and switched hands and she was rating wayyy to early. I think her yelling at me to go 2 hands helped a lot with our 2nd.

Please take a look and tell me if you see anything that I need to change.

I would suggest shortening your reins, the other thing I see is that I would work on rate and shape on all of your barrels. I would start at a walk.

You are really pulling on him about a stride before the first. I would practice at a walk stopping a stride before then getting his shape and circling the barrel a few times.

Going to second you are using a lot of outside rein to pull him off of the barrel, does he knock this barrel? I would practice at all speeds starting with a walk stopping when his shoulder gets to the barrel then reverse arc 360 then circle the barrel a few times.

For third he had no rate going in. I would stop the horse a few strides before the barrel then get the shape and circle it a few times.

I would also work the pattern at a walk going for perfect, emphasizing the shape and rate.

Thank you!

I was thinking the same thing about my reins after watching the video a couple of times. I will work on the rate issues too.

I also agree on the reins! And definitely needs some more rate practice. Slow work is key! When you perfect everything slow you can get everything correct when you get faster! Also, your sister is right. Two hands all the way until your rate point, a two handed check, then pull to your pocket. Practice perfect (:

Taking notes from both of you.

first of all that was an awesome run to think you cant go to the jackpots is crazy. I only see a few things that really stick out: 1 I would shorten reins and try not to hold her off the 2nd going across the pen but more pick your rate/ turn spot and get her going straight to that instead of you holding her off across the pen while she fades to it, and last I think just a 2 handed bump would have given you the rate to turn 3 but honestly that really looked good. Your a realy quiet rider and that horse really wants to work for you.

Nice job :)

I agree on shortening the reins. If you take some of that slack out of them, you'll be able to cue her without moving your hands a mile. Much more efficient and you get a faster response.

It is tough to rate that third barrel when it's out in the middle of nowhere, and I can't really tell if you were just late rating her or if it was something else. My guess is that you just rated late. That's fairly easy to fix just by concentrating on finding your spot while you run to the 3rd.

You were a tad early at the second barrel and your mare had to take an extra step or two on the backside to get around it cleanly. Not a big deal, but it does cost a tenth or two and sometimes that's the difference between a 1st place check and going home empty handed.

Looks like you have a nice mare who really wants to work for you. :

I don't have any more to add to what has already been said.  But I would like to say I like your horse and with a little tweeking you should feel comfortable going to any barrel race you want to.

^^ditto. Also wanted to add that I liked how she shut down and got really quite for you when you were done running. I love a horse that can walk in and walk out!

Thanks everyone!

I will be shorting her reins, but when we are not running a pattern she is so level headed that I feel like I will be in her mouth if I shorten them any. She has always walked in and out clam. This was a standard pattern too.

I will be working on everything else also!

I call her my pony, because she is MAYBE 14hh.

I thought that was pretty darn nice. I loved that you actually heard and went back to 2 hands. I think timing issues got you on 1 and 3. On 1 you might have dropped to 1 hand a smidge too soon when entering 2 handed would have helped you more. On 3 I think she just got to rolling about the time she needed to think turn but she came right back to you when you asked. I ride in a little longer rein so try shorter like suggested and see what you like.
Nice!

When warming up or riding at home, I ride in split reins. I switch reins before competition, or bridles depending which is needed.
