Location: East Coast Speed Horse | I know we there is always a feed thread..how do I find it? I fed progressive and now can't get it. I can get Purina, Blue Seal, Triple Crown, Nutrena and Poulin. But they are all so high in fiber!!! I have an old retired air fern....I have to throw him something..not a pellet eater..and a 5 yr old, very TB'y..like to keep his top line improving...need to keep his brain down. I am so sick of comparing.... |

Location: East Coast Speed Horse | Well they have free choice hay all the time. Someone told me that the high fiber grains are meant for people that don't feed a lot of hay...and that it only makes everything works harder...not sure I but that! All opinions welcome!!! |

| Not the OP here but I must chime in about the fiber thing....I don't like high fiber feed either. You have to feed it at a higher rate and grain is expensive. We grow our own hay so I do not want to be paying $18 a bag for fiber filler. I want all the fiber I feed to come from my hay. If I'm going to pay $12-18 per bag of grain it better have a low feeding rate(3-6 lbs per day) instead of the feeding rate jacked up to 8-12 lbs per day because of all the fiber filler. Free choice hay is is a much cheaper way of getting all the fiber they need unless its an old horse who doesn't have the ability to consume much hay. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I have heard great things about Triple Crown. For a nice topline, I suggest adding Muscle Mass. It's made by THE Equine Edge. Great great daily supplment to go with any feed program. Really fills them out. And hey, California Chrome is using it. | I personally don't look much at fibre content, I look at the non structural carbohydrates, as this is what will cause a change in ph in the hind gut which if you have a susceptible horse it can cause founder, exacerbate ulcers, etc.
Nutrena, I spoke with the rep yesterday they have a senior feed that if you add water it turns to mash in 30 seconds, they also have one feed that is low in NSC comparable to buckeye. Nutrena also has pre and probiotics in all their feed. |

If you feed less than the recommended rate on the bag your horse will not be getting all the vitamins and minerals they need. Grain is formulated to provide everything they need ONLY if its fed at at least the minimum recommended rate on the bag whether they are on pasture or free choice hay or not. |

| I like Triple Crown and they have options that are not high in fiber and even if you are feeding those the feeding rate is still a minimum of 5lbs and many horses look good on just the 5. I also suggest adding The Muscle Mass to fill one out you won't be disappointed. |

Location: Florida | Nutrena SafeChoice Perform + Nutrena Empower Boost + AE Detox got my high strung mare to fill out and building a topline.. where Seminole and Strategy were not... plus exercise of course. And my pasture rat gets the Stock and Stable Horse by Nutrena... cheap but enough to keep him fat and shiny. My whole barn is on various Nutrena feeds I love them. |

| TC 30% is a ration balancer, would be great for your easy keeper airfern. All the vitamins and minerals in just 3 cups per day. 1 lb. is the daily rate. This is what my easy keepers get.
For the TB-like horse, that needs some bulk, without the hype, the Triple Crown Senior is IDEAL! It's high in fat, and low in starch. only 11.% NSC. looks like a sweet feed but isn't - it's beet pulp based with added oil, so it looks sweet and sticky but its deceiving.
Blue Seal Sentinel Performance LS is also another great one for a horse that needs additional calories, and its low in starch as well. I think also around 11%. |
