Got home last night and my one mare was standing at the water tank kicking over her head, the other mare in the pen next to her had her "Bot Fly, I'm gonna kill you!" Face on. Ran down and spray both of them with fly spray. Is there anything that is effective for more than 15 minutes for Bot Flies????

I've heard feeding garlic helps keep the flies away.

You have bot flies at this time of the year, now thats just strange to me, the only time we have them is in the cooler months.

Around here we get them around this time of year, though most often it is more mid September..Hope that means it is going to be an early fall and some much needed rain with it. I've also heard that for garlic to be effective you have to feed it at some crazy amount and it takes a while to be effective. I'm hoping to find something I can use now, last year my poor big mare was on guard for those things 24/7, like you could hardly get a ride in because she just knew a bot fly was going to attack.

A fly sheet and fly boots may be your only defense in this situation. I hate those dang BOT flies, they are so annoying.

While they are buzzing my horses and if I am around I will catch them darn little pest's and pull their heads off, hate them and their darn eggs.

So do my mares!!! The gelding doesnt' seem to react quite the way these two do, they go ballistic...maybe he has thicker skin. Ack!!! I dont' get paid until Friday, only have one fly sheet and have to leave tomorrow to go to a funeral for several days. I'm just going to have to ask the neighbor who is feeding for me if he will fly spray them when he comes to feed and get thru this the best we can.
Why can't I be rich????

We have been feeding our horses granulated garlic and it does help with the small flies but not so much for the bigger bot flies.

Endure fly spray or Tri Tech 14 (they are about thesame ) both seem to work really well but bottle says lasts up to 14 days....not hardly. .i reapply about every other day..sometimes every day but Iit definitely works great and for a fly spray smells good and has sunscreen in it..run about 17-19 bucks a spray bottle..

Someone is not effectively worming for bots!  Try the Endure fly spay and then make sure you use a boticide at the proper time of year and get your neighbor horses to effectively worm properly.

Yeah that is my problem. My neighbor has 40 some head of horses and I don't think they ever get wormed.

I can't say this is true.  I worm as prescribed and at the recommended time for bots with boticide and that doesn't keep them from attacking my horses.  Of course, I think East Texas bugs and creatures are the most craziest, obnoxious things ever and it doesn't matter what you do, they don't die.
