My dog has just started to have trouble when he eats. He acts like he is choking and making a hyperventilating sound. I am not sure if it's coming from his nose or throat. It is like he is sucking in and his air is cut off almost. At first we thought he was just eating too fast and sucking his food in and getting it hung up. Has anyone had this happen to their dog or know what causes this? It happens most when he is eating and we started to soak his food but has happened when he is just laying around also.

If it's an older small dog it seems that the esophagas starts to get closed up. My little poodle does this more when she gets excited but when she eats too fast too.

Probably a collapsing trachea.  Is it a older, small dog breed?  My daughter's rat terrier had this. Here is a link for you to read about it.  There are also you tube videos of dogs making the sound if you want to see if it's the same as what your dog is doing.  When our dog had it, we chose not to do anything about it because hers wasn't that bad.  She lived with it a long time.  Sorry I don't know how to make the link live so you will have to copy and paste into your browser.

Wow that is young, I would take him to the vet, maybe he's got something stuck in his throat.

That is my next step, it just started a couple of days ago. He has always done this a little bit when he would inhale his food or something but it has just gotten worse the last few days.

Until you can get to the vet...set his bowl up higher so he doesn't have to put his head down when he eats. If you have to..hold his bowl up for him and see if that helps. They actually sell a bowl stand so they are eating level.

I second the elevated food stands! Foster & Smith makes a cheap foldable bowl stand or you can set it on something to test it out ...If you don't have a rubber grib bottom on the bowl double sided tape works lol.

One of my previous fosters did the same thing when he got a stick wedged across the roof of his mouth. I couldn't figure it out until I pryed his mouth open and looked all over and saw the stick he bit in half jammed up there.

Good Luck!

Sounds like a reverse sneeze to me. if he's young and he does it often it could be a sign of a bronchial infection. The reverse sneeze isn't going to hurt him, but if it's all the time I would go get it checked out for an underlying infection. It is common that dogs do it, usually to clear yuck from up in the upper area behind the nose. Our red heeler does it every once in a while and my mothers American bull dog does it at least once or twice a day.

I will try the elevated food. He didn't make the noise today that i heard when he ate. I just hope it's nothing major.

My dog was doing this exact thing a while back, she ended up having kennel cough, some antibiotics cleared her right up. She had no actual cough, was just acting like she was choking when she ate.

It is really scary to see them do this. Makes me feel so bad for him because we can not help him when he does this.
