| Dry conditions in California have put us through a horrid drought here in the Eastern Sierra. That coupled with winds of 60 miles an hour turned into a deadly cocktail on the evening of Friday the 6th. The high winds snapped power poles, rubbed wires together and created sparks which in turn gave life to the Round Fire that ravaged two small communities North of Bishop, Swall Meadows and Paradise. Both communities experienced mandatory evacuations. A lady told my sister she runs a large boarding facility for dogs and because she was in town when the fire started and the evacuations occured, she was not permitted to go back to her ranch and evacuate the pets. I haven't heard yet if her home and barn were salvaged. Luckily the rain started falling Friday night and helped with the containment of the fire but not before it burned 7,000 acres, destroyed 40 structures, including homes, and damaged 5 residence. These little communities are comprised of rural homes and large ranches. 250 people were evacuated from the areas. It is my understanding that there are several families who lost everything.
My mom's cousin was one of the lucky and firefighters and himself were able to save his home, barn and corrals but lost all his feed. These pastures are his winter and summer pastures so he will be forced to hay until the grass comes back this spring. I know another local rancher who is also our communities large animal vet, lost his entire ranch. As for the other ranchers in the area I have not heard.
As of last night at 5:30 residence were still not permitted to return to the area due to the downed and live power lines and leaking fuel tanks in the area. Some know they lost homes, some have no idea and are praying.
Prayers are greatly appreciated at this time.
If anyone is interested in donating, the Bishop City Chamber of Commerce has established a relief fund at a local credit union or you can donate to the account through a go fund me page. I understand that they can get state relief but that can take months. The page will be open until next Saturday is what the creator posted. If you can't donate please just share on whatever social media you use. Every little bit of exposure helps!
