Location: Oklahoma | How do you all go about making a line up of stallions for your broodmare?
Are there certain varieties you try to go with? I am seriously thinking about letting my mare be a broodmare after what she just produced. I have a couple in mind, but being on a budget, I can't really go where I want to. I am also looking for an individual that can be an all around horse.

Location: Desert Land | I breed to sell for marketability. I try to match up a stallion to the mare based on conformation, bloodlines and desireability - in that order. I study sales results, scour the all the online sale ads and read a lot on Facebook to see what is bringing good money, what people want and breed to the best stallions I can afford. |

| I just picked my studs for next year. I obviously wanted all the goods but most important to me is mind and marketability. Obviously I want conformation too but I hate naturally nutty horses and don't want anyone to be able to say I raised a nutty baby.
Any who, I got on this proven kick. I wanted stallions that have performed themselves and produced good performers without breaking the bank. I found a MJP stud with a good race record and produce record and 2 barrel racing studs that have won many large 5Ds such as BBR, NBHA finals ect and also produced 1D horses. All 3 fees combined I'm looking at $2500. No, I'm not breeding to Sun Frost or FG himself, but I am breeding to proven performers and producers. Dont get me wrong, all 3 horses are bred out the wazoo and very pretty but I don't think a stud fee HAS to have a $2000 price tag to give you a nice foal. |

I haven't bred to too many outside stallions, but when given the opportunity I go with what is popular enough that I could sell it if it isn't something I want to keep (filly), incentives (for marketability), pedigree (there are some I love and some I wouldn't own) and color if it is a toss up between 2 stallions. Not necessarily buckskin/palomino but I will take a bay over a sorrel as they are my favorite.
I usually have a stud in mind for a long time that just catches my eye. Lately it has been Jess Jones and Pappasito. I just can't fault them and so if given the chance would pick through my 4 mares and see who would cross best. |

Location: Oklahoma | I really like Pappasito and have seen some pretty colts by him. I want to cross her on speed at least one year. There are just sooooo many choices out there! I would LOVE FWOTR but I am not really sure I can swing that.
My main concern is not breeding the speed out. I like the older blood too, but would really like to make them marketable as babies as well. We can only ride so many. LOL

I start out by looking at what's winning and what's selling; you can register with Robin Glenn pedigree reports to get weekly updates on results. I also get Barrel Horse News and the Barrel Racers Report in my email. What's selling is not always the same as what's winning, lol. Check out the heritage place sale, the Texas Best Sale, the BFA sale and results, the JBQH sale, the Jud Little sale. Some people will gamble on offspring of a sire they really like that isn't a proven producer yet for example. This gives me a pretty broad list. I narrow it when I also purchase the Magic Cross Reports from Equistat for my mares. Then I'm pulling names together or at least grandsire names together that are proven crosses. I ask some trainers I trust what they are riding and liking. I pay attention to comments people make on what stallion owners are also easy to deal with and which ones ship well since I don't do live cover. I pay attention to stallion auctions and whether or not I think I can get one I like at a discount or if they have mare considerations. I usually have a list of 15 or so stallions going into early fall and obviously narrow it down to one when its time. Sometimes you can get a discount for paying before Jan 1 too. I try to take advantage of that if there's a discount. There's a ton of factors but in the end I'm gunning for a good looking, good minded baby (with color if possible) with a great and marketable pedi. I like babies that sell themselves.
I use similar guidelines when I breed for myself but will gamble on some studs that aren't quite as marketable that I really like the look of or other offspring of.
ETA: on sale results look at SOLD ads, not just listed ones. Just because one is listed at a certain price doesn't mean they sell at that price. This is especially true for BHW ads and Facebook groups. I always click on the sold button and search.

Location: Alberta | I go with my gut feeling ....granted pedigree and conformation definitely play a factor, I tend to go outside the box and do what I like, even if it's not whats cool at the time....I keep what I breed for myself anyways! The last breeding I did was (at the time) an unproven stud (Firewater Flit son out of a Packin Sixes mare) to an unproven mare. That stallion is now a rodeo finals qualifier/1D horse and his oldest foal crop is 5 and are already proven performers at the futurities......and my guy is a beyond talented horse who I hope I can keep up with
