I am wanting to finally order my brand but I am not 100% sure what size to go with. Is 4" pretty standard? I don't want a large brand but it needs to be large enough to turn out nice. Then 3/8" or 9/16"? I am thinking 4"x9/16" or could I get away with a little smaller? Any ideas or tips would be great! Thanks!!

The brand in my avatar is 5".....I ordered it thinking a 5" would be the right size, but it's actually smaller than I had expected.

We haven't branded yet, but when we set it up against the hip...it's decent sized just not big enough to notice from a distance

I will be ordering mine in 2 sizes.... 3" for the weanlings and 4 1/2" for the adult horses. I have one I bought as a weanling with a bigger brand it it looks stupid as the horse grows. The brand grows too and becomes almost too big. Thank god it's faded.... I'm so happy you can't really see it. I know other horses that have been re-branded in the same spot so it stands out better and this particular brand looks silly like that.

4" is standard. Here are some of mine and they are branded when they are about 5/6 months old. I feel it is a tad big, but most everyone loves it and my husband is too cheap to order a 3".

My friend has two brand sizes too. I won't be branding weanlings so I just need a horse size. I don't like large brands but I also want it to look nice.

I would speak with someone who has done a lot of freeze branding as there are tricks to the trade when developing brands, my brand is 3 individual pieces, and works out to be 5".

I was told you need 1" of space between each piece of metal because any closer it will blend into one. Since I have 3 pieces two pieces were closer then and inch and did blend together

Check your state branding laws - some states require brands to be a certain size - example: must be 4" or larger at widest/tallest point. Mine is 4" and I love the size :)

Oh true. It may say something about 4". I will have to check that again. It's been awhile since I registered it.

We brand a lot of horses (as in having branded a couple thousand over the last 8 years).  The brands we make are nice size,  noticeable from a distance but not billboards.  Depending on your brand location that is something to factor in as well as your state requirements (in brand law states) for minimum size.  Those are determining factors for size.  Most irons we make, each character is 2 1/2  inches.  However our state does not allow brands like the lightning bolt, steer heads, etc.  Those are considered ornamental brands and are not assigned as useable brands for horses.

When I speak of brand location in relationship to the size of the brand, you want your brand to fit on the brand location well to produce a brand that has no gaps in it.  That means on a thigh brand you  would want the brand to lay flat on the muscle so it can make contact at all times during the branding process. In the picture, the smaller brand is a freeze brand for horses made out of 1/4" cold roll and the larger brand is a cattle hot iron brand made out of bar stock.

Well my brand is not actually registered as a lightning bolt because those are not registerable here either. It is registered as something else that looks very similar to a lightning bolt.
