Looking for advice from those with experience running stallions on how to motivate them & get the drive back. I have a 4 year old stallion that seems to have all the talent needed, but has lost the drive. Thanks

I had a stud that I trained on and got to enter on and off due to soundness problems. I miss him a ton...I put him down last year as an 8 year old. He would get a little bored and distracted from time to time as well...it always seemed like having two weeks off, turned out when possible, and then a week or so of pature riding would do the trick and get him back into "motivated, work" mode.

Studs have anatomical issues to deal with when it comes to performance events....He might be getting "sore".

Great Point...every now and then we would turn a barrel and I think he might have gotten a good "pinch" because he would out of nowhere kinda throw his head up and stop..

I have heard of the "pinch" also. A couple people I know rub vicks in that area to make them draw up. I'm not sure if it works or not. Never tried it as our stallion has plenty of motivation and not a problem with the "pinch" that I'm aware of

I knew a trainer at the track that would spray green alcohol on the colts before they went out for work or a race....I am guessing the 'Vicks' does the same? or at least is in the same train of thought? Not sure if it works or not, but it would be worth a try, on the lounge line :) first :)

Your horse is 4.  How fast was he clocking and at what age compared to now?  In other words when did he lose his "drive?"

He was clocking a half second or less off, now he is a second out. Had hocks & stifles injected this summer. Seems to have lost his drive.

I would continue to look more to soundness issues than gender issues.  Anyone who would put the aforementioned products on a stallions privates should first use them on their own.

If he has lost the drive then you need to do a thorough vet check.  Applying things to private parts is cruel

No kidding Tia -- I use a very gentle 'made for parts' oil on Zan's parts to make sure they don't 'stick.'  I do have to make sure to rinse the area after working, but I've never thought for a minute that Zan has had a man-part issue.
