Like...legit crazy. Is this normal? I understand the added protein will hype one up but this was ridiculous. To the point that the horse couldnt even stand still. And she ran everywhere! Walking wasnt even in her vocabulary anymore. I pulled her off of them after a week and now my dead head gelding is getting them...who has remained that way. Just wondering if any of you guys had experienced this before.

I have one gelding now that loses his mind on alfalfa (hay). It's like you spend the entire ride trying to burn off the excess energy to find his brain again. Sweats profusely, jigs everywhere. You'd think he was getting quarts of sweet feed instead of plain ol' alfalfa. He's the only one I've ever owned that reacts this way to it. Put him on Bermuda or orchard grass & he's a totally different animal. Some just can't handle it.

I LOVE to feed alfalfa but the horse in my avatar can't handle it. Dave had a gelding (Hitler, lol) who couldn't tolerate alfalfa. c'est la vie.

Try feeding a very small qunity and build her up on it, might work better that way.

In my lifetime, I've owned 2 geldings that couldn't handle oats and one mare that couldn't handle alfalfa.

That's strange, my PSSM type 2 mare has days she's absolutely crazy (up the wall I couldn't pay someone to take her crazy) but the extra protein in the alfalfa pellets keeps the edge off and pain free. Maybe he's feeling better from the protein? I'm just bouncing this off because it's what popped into my head :) There are a lot of very popular bloodlines that are type 2 positive and people don't realize that yet because of the new info ;

My gelding was this way with alfalfa hay. but I was also feeding grain with it. So when I tried to get away from grain I was so nervous bout trying alfalfa again. He gets the omnis cubes which is alafalfa, northern oats, and flaxseed ground together to make a cube and he acts normal. So relieved and he looks really good too! Been told sometimes it matters what you are feeding along with the alfalfa that its not the alfalfa but the mixture that causing the high.

What blood lines have you found to be positive?

For the record, the gelding I mentioned was getting nothing but alfalfa hay, salt, & water at the time. If I had never encountered him, I'm not sure I'd believe horses could react that way to something like alfalfa either. I've spent the majority of my life in southern California and southern Arizona; down there alfalfa is way cheaper to buy than grass hay. I fed it as my primary roughage for years with no issues. I actually love feeding it to my horses, or at least every horse but this one... lol We know there are horses that have allergies to alfalfa, maybe horses that seem to become more volatile while eating alfalfa are doing so because they are having a reaction of some sort? I never saw hives or any typical allergy symptoms with mine, but it doesn't mean he wasn't being affected in some way. Maybe he was trying to tell me something was wrong, he didn't feel right. Who knows? All I know is when he eats grass hay instead we don't have the crazy behavior. It's more than just feeling frisky and some extra energy with him, it's like his brain is just gone & he doesn't even realize a rider is there. Zero handle and zero focus.

I have a gelding that loses his miind on alfalfa pellets.  I now feed the alfalfa/timothy mix pellets or half and half if they don't have the mix.  This seems to work well for him.

maybe it's the sugar within the alfalfa? I know my yearling filly is getting wild on it lol, but she is getting cubes daily. She sure looks good on them though.

I must have a wild crowd! All of ours get hot on straight aflafla. Hate feeding it straight even with lots of turnout. They level out with a heavy workload around branding but lil fire breathing for first few rides. They do look darn good though

Can't say some yet :/ Soon! There's a few I can say but I don't want to single those few out yet :
