I had a light come on yesterday on my 2012 Dodge that said Perform Service. I think it has something to do with emissions maintenance. Has anybody done this and about how much did it cost?

Could be something as simple as needing an oil change. Even if you had the oil just changed, if they didn't reset the timer, it will tell you it needs it again. We had a 2013 Dodge and it told us when to change the fuel filters, change oil, etc. It kind of depends on how many miles are on it too.

You need to get a code reader and find out the code that set the light. That will tell you. Probably emissions DPF related. Happens all the time and is a necessary evil thanks to the EPA

Perform service has to do with the emissions system. It could be a variety of things. Like someone else said you need a code reader to find out what exactly what it is.

My 2011 was showing that message plus the check engine light was off and on, dealership said I needed $4000 worth of work on the emmissions system.  I took it to a local diesel performance shop and they put a delete kit on it for $1200, solved the problem and my fuel mileage and power is better now.  My truck has about 180,000 miles on it.

Lucky you.... but some of us live in inspection states so that is not an option! LOL

If it has between 50-65K on the odo it's the crank case ventilation filter.

$100 and a 10mm socket with about 20 minutes and you are golden.

They will turn that light on as a reminder so that the filter does not plug up and bypass motor oil into the turbo. It will come on every 50k or so

It is if your SO has connections LOL We have lots of friends in various places who pass my Dad's deleted 6.7L Ford every year LOL
He gets great mileage and has a full delete with a programmer. That truck is a beast. Cost him 5,000 for a full delete and straight pipe exhaust from the turbo back. His truck can breathe now and has way more power and great mileage.

So I talked to a diesel mechanic and he said that at around 67,000 miles that light will come on and it means that it is time to clean some parts on the emissions. It will cost $650.00 if it only needs to be cleaned but it could be up to $850.00 if it needs new parts. Where I live, we do not even have to smog our vehicles so this kind of bummed me out.

Well, for about 1500-2000 you can do a delete if your not in an inspection state.

When you put the EGR delete kit on, does it cancel out your engine warranty?

Sure does! And if a dealer really really wants to be a jerk they can report you to the EPA for knowingly violating and damaging pollution devices on your vehicle which is a federal law. Some states, like CA, make all diesels do a Smog check every other year. THey don't check for emissions out the pipe, they just visually inspect that all smog equipment is present.
