| Mine came with the sponge to use on them but I don't think it does any better then a curry comb. A friend that sell CSI pads told me to use a vaccuum that has the beater bar. I put the setting all the way down and that did wonders. They still need to be power washed but that got a lot of the packed on hair off. |

How do you guys clean your 5 star pads?
I do what 5 Star tells you not to do.... Once or twice a year, I pressure wash them. My method is to put some OxyClean detergent on it first, wet it and then try to rub it around and leave it soak for about 15 minutes first. Seems to "loosen" the dirt better. Then I take the pressure washer to it, but I am careful to only wash one side at a time so that I can keep that one side flat on the ground; I never have both sides flat on the ground at the same time, just to help keep it's shape better. Then air dry on a saddle stand. Then I condition the leather wear plates when it's dry. In-between these washes, I just use a rubber curry to brush off dirt/hair every few rides. I don't use the sponge at all. I don't feel like it works. My oldest 5 Star pad is about 8 years old. Still looks fantastic. Pressure washing hasn't hurt them yet! (I just don't know how you would get them clean without pressure washing???) |

| I used the method on their website once. It took HOURS. So now I use a liner and wash the liners frequently in the washing machine. |

| ETA: REPLYING TO R_BEAU Mine is the natural color and this is what I really WANT to do lol. It has a lot of dry sweat on the underside and lots of red dust on the top. I think I am going to give the pressure washer a whirl.

| I hang mine over the fence and use a shedding blade and lots of water. Not a power washer but a sprayer. It takes usually 2 days and many sprayings. I have one pad that is 12 years old and is still very soft and flexible and looks new after its washing. |

| I pressure wash mine. Deanna Fry Bidwell (RockyRoad) is THE premier dealer on here and has sold for the company since day one. She told me to do that. A: Don't get too close, as you WILL separate the fibers and blow them apart. B: Hang the pad by the gullet hole and go in segments, top to bottom. If no gullet hole, lay up against something so it's not flat or bent bent backwards. C: No detergent recommended. D: hang in natural shape to dry OUT of the sun. This will take up to a week depending on thickness. You can go quickly over a thicker one and it won't collect so much water. Otherwise it'll take FOREVER to dry completely. I've pressure washed mine several times and they come out pretty dang close to like new. I've had one since around 2005. |

ALL this ^^^^^ I have always cleaned my pads this way, and if you are using a pressure washer for the first time be very careful as not get to close to the pad you can ruin a pad in a hurry with a pressure washer.

Ha ha ha ha ha, someone could make some good money off the ones that dont know how to clean these pads, I myself think they are very easy to clean.. I just dont let the sweat and grim build up, to me that would not be very comfortable for the horse that you use them on if that much sweat and dirt builds up. Edited to add: I think on 5 Stars web -page they do tell you how to clean them.. But I just did it the way Deanna tolded me to..

| Also helps to keep it hung up by the gullet hole and spray from a distance at a 45 degree angle. If you spray it straight on, you're just going to push the dirt and sweat further into the pad unless you take a hose to it and really make sure it soaks all the way through. |

Location: MN | I hung mine by the gullet when I washed with garden hose then put it over a pipe fence to dry. My problem is that it kind of pulled apart where it is sown together. You can easily see the threads. ?? |
