Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I have a 3yr old that's getting his head up and I don't want to have to put a tie down on him yet so I'm trying different bits. I borrowed a draw bot from a friend but she also gave me a Myler bit. It's kind of like a Mullen mouth bit but has copper rollers. Has anyone used them? Are they heavy bits?

Location: Texas | Mylers are my go to bit when we start colts. The bend in the bit really encourages the. Correct headset. However a bit alone will not fix him getting his head up. Side reins, draws, German or running martingales are some tools that will help. A tie down is not designed to be used to keep a horses head down. I have a young girl now is is training g her first barrel horse he also has a tendency to bring his head up is she gets lazy about riding him correctly or he has to many fast runs with out slow work. I have her school him in a German martingale for a couple of days and he is back to rating and listening again with nice collection ( disclaimer: collection is not just having their head down. It starts at their butt and moves forward. Head and neck are last.) I really really love Mylers for young horses My favorite is the smooth snaffle that my husband calls my "magic bit" I always look at tack swaps/stores for discounted Mylers and buy them when ever I can! |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | He's still soft. I ride him in a Mullen mouth but he's just naturally high headed. I tried a martingale and he's so small that it was hard to get it adjust instead right. I don't think it really did him any good. |

| My gelding packs his myler comfort snaffle really nice. He can't stand fully broken bits.
Start with some forward work, driving him up behind and under himself. High heads usually mean hollowed backs. |

I'm not sure. I don't think I know the difference. It was nylon rope and went around his head clipped the the girth and then had 2 rings to run reins through. Out riding and slow work he's fine with his head for the most part but when I try to lope him through he carries his head real high and I can't do much with him. Changing to the Mullen mouth bit helped but didn't eliminate it. |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | He's young and he's a spook. Everything I've ever rode when the spook they just jump kinda and look really good at what ever it was. When he spooks were leaving there and there's no stoping him until he thinks he's far enough away. |

this is a german martingale
Try the German martingale.
It will help with head set and collection, will not help with the spookiness. |

Location: Florida.. | and as in all new Gadgets on youngsters.. be aware it may make him feel trapped if hes not soft already in the poll .. lunge him in side reins and get him used to things first.
i also think slow work for him being 3 would be a good thing.. suppleing and to the bit.jmo |

Yeah the last couple times I've rode him I've stayed in the round pen working on being soft and breaking and flexing and making him flex without him fighting or me having to pull hard. |
