Had my first set of twins this morning! They are both up and have both nursed! Look to be very healthy but I know that might not be the case! Can people who have successfully raised twins before give me suggestions! Should I pull one and nurse it or let them be until one starts going down hill a little! This mare has always produced a TON of milk and raises LARGE foals! Just any help in general would be great! I know there is already a thread on the Firewater Twins but didn't want to read all if the posts!

Congrats! I would have my vet to come check them over, possibly run an IgG test in 24 hrs.

We are located in Union Iowa! Yes, our pastures have greened up really nice this year and we always let our seasoned mares foal out on pasture! I know she looked big this year but never expected TWINS!

why would you consider pulling one and letting it go ... if they are nursing well and you've had them checked by vet I think you are getting ahead of yourself and maybe a bit over whelm. There are a few people on BHW that have twins this year -pm them and get suggestions for health care. OMG let him decide if one won't make it not you unless one has major health issues per vet check.

Oh, no I didn't mean let it go! I just didn't know if people had more success with pulling one and putting it on a bottle and leaving the other one on the mare or if you just keep them both on the mare until you see an issue and if they are both fine nursing until they are weaned then just leave them both on the mare! I never meant I would let one just die, that is horrible! I know a lot of people on BHW have ad twins and that is why I am reaching out and asking what has worked for everyone else!

thank you for clarifing that - was was almost in a panic.- as my heart slows to normal ..... yes if the mare isn't producting enough milk then supplimenting bottle milk for them will do. Are they both roans and what sex?
They are so cute I'm sure they will do fine.

Leave then both on the mare. Looks like she has enough lush grass to accommodate enough milk for both. The more they nurse the more milk mom will produce as long as mom has no hidden issues.

Exactly! Leave them both with the mare. Even if you end up supplimenting them,
( But I doubt you will have to
) still leave them with the mare. Congrats on your new babys. Do we get a pedigree for these little gems?
