For all of you that ride studs or barrel race them. Which saddles do you find fit the shoulders the best. I am having issues with the big muscle between the wither and shoulder blade...

I realize every horse is different, but I am looking for a starting point or a certain style of bar etc.. I am thinking a cactus would be worth looking for to see if it fits...

Thanks.

Too funny that I'm posting under KMC as she is the owner of the stallion my big colt is out of. I ride him in a Caldwell. He's massive...

None of the stallions I've ridden were shaped the same as each other. It all just depends on the horse. If you're having trouble fitting a particular horse, try to find a good saddle fitter that will look at your horse in person.

Unfortunately, we don't really have good western saddle fitters in my area. And, we have even less options of trying saddles on, so they all have to be purchased, shipped in, or the horse taken somewhere that is a couple hour haul to try them.

I know my question sounds un-educated and I know that all horses are completely different, I am just looking for a starting place for 'best bets' to start with instead of being way out in left field with the bigger shoulder muscles. I cant afford to spend just as much in shipping and travel costs as the saddle...

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I appreciate it. I am starting to do some research on the brands already mentioned.

I use a Meleta Brown on the FG stud I ride. He's a massive booger, very thick all over. Regardless of the brand of saddle, MOST are all built on a tree so very similar that they will fit/or not fit, the same. I highly recommend getting with Meleta Brown and she can give you some ideas. She also does not push her saddles on you, it just so happens that her tree designs are just that much better than most out there.

I don't have a stud but have a mare who is huge

The only saddle that she is comfortable in is an 11 gullet flat crown c

On my search these are the saddles I have found to fit wider horses

Lisa Lockhart circle y wide tree, the gullet is 8 the angle of the bars is 120

Tod sloan b3 bars

Caldwell pro max or maxxed out

Crown c, Martin can make any tree to fit your horse, they have a loaner program so you can try before you buy, please do this as crown c is not for everyone

Tami semas wide fit (I really want to try one of these). These weren't out when I bought my saddle

Pozzi wide fit, some say the pozzi pro wide fit is wider then the pozzi, I don't know.

Lynn Mackenzie nueva tree by double j, if you google it on YouTube Lynn has an awesome video describing her saddle

Saddles that don't fit my wide horses

Sharon Camarillo, anything older then 3 yrs it doesn't fit, and it is an older one

The mare in my avatar is built like you describe. She's not tall but is cutting bred with a lot of muscling between her shoulders and withers. I've gone through several very nice custom made saddles. Coats, crown c's with big gullets. I loved the other saddles for me, but the only thing I found that fits her is the cactus cj. It's quite perfect actually. Here's a pic from the front. Both a wide gullet and flat bar.

Back when I ran my stud the only thing I could get to fit him was a Cactus CJ.  I still use them today.

I ride a mare, but she is thicker than most studs. I ride her in a Billy Cooke saddle. It took a long time to find one to fit her, and we just had to take her to various tack stores and try them on before we purchased. She's a TANK. Once we found one to fit her, then I had to like it too (major problem also with many saddles).
