Location: California | When do you decide to make the jump to start entering actual rodeos? If the horse is broke and mentally ready and nothing new really bothers them, when do you start entering? |

If you're feeling brave, enter the perf. Best choice is probably slack, though. I had a couple that I entered perf the first rodeo and they ran it just like any barrel race. I've also had others that took a year of running slack before they would make a decent run in a perf. Some horses have it, some need to learn it!

I guess my main worry is if you wait till your horse is running certain times or?
My mare is well seasoned but has just a tually started being entered instead of just exhibitioned. Lack of money and my forgetting how to ride/being in her way when we run has been our main issue. Lol. She knows her job and has carried flags in large rodeos and helped turn back cattle so the rodeo scene isn't a big deal to her. It's all me. Lol. This is a small rodeo that only has the perf friday and saturday it seems... |

If you are expecting to place, your horse should be running 1D times. IF your horse will make a jackpot run, you have a decent chance at a check :-) I enter them when I feel the horse is mentally prepared because I like to go - not because I expect a check. That's just me, though.
See if you can find results of the rodeo last year. I do that to get an idea of how big/small the pattern is, how many entered, who won it, how many holes were paid, how many entries they got, how many tenths off was the last hole paid.
Some rodeos will take exhibition entries, too - may want to check into that if you don't want to pay the higher entry fee. |

Location: California | Thank you! Mentality i know she'll be fine. Me? That I'm not so sure about. Lol. Now i nust have to decide if time wise if it's a smart choice....
I get home from work at 6pm, i have everything ready just have to hook up, load, and go. It's about 1hr 30mins away and starts at 8pm....
ETA: i nust called and she will be sending me an order of events and said it shouldn't be a problem if i show up right before or as its starting. So as long as barrels aren't first it should be ok... Lol. The is slack, the flyer just didn't have much info on it.

Location: California | I will! Barrels are 2nd to last so I'll have plenty of time! I really dont expect to place but right now the goal is to hit as many as possible so we can get better! :) |

| All you can do is enter! Don't expect your first couple runs to be perfect if the horse has never been to a rodeo. There are a lot of new sites and noises that jackpot horses just aren't accustomed too! On the other hand, some horses really thrive off the rodeo atmosphere and out do their jackpot runs 10 fold!

Location: Pa | I just ran my first rodeo and my mares first rodeo a few weeks ago. She knocked the first two barrels! She never ever knocks barrels. But I know I shouldn't have expected a perfect run, the music really distracted her. I'm still proud of Her for trying. She just didn't react well. Everyone was really nice and supportive . Everyone made sure I didnt feel embarrassed . We are going to keep trying ! Hopefully she will get use to it. I hope your first run is better than mine ! Just remember everyone has a first rodeo , we have all been there. Keep your head up and keep trying. |

I'll post the video tomorrow no matter how ugly my run ends up being! Lol. My biggest hurdle has been getting out of training mode. Luckily my mare is very tolerant when I "forget" things or start bracing up. She just goes out and does her job. Hopefully everything goes smoothly! Now if I can remember to push her and stay out of her way that's the main thing! :) |

Location: California | Well all in all it went pretty gold! Serenity was a bit nervous and was a little worse after we ran I'm guessing from the exciteme t from running. We had a few mistakes but i am VERY happy with how she ran! We ran 3rd out in the Perf, bulls were in the chutes at 1st barrel and kids were twirling light sticks at 2nd. She fought me at 2nd which you almost can't see in the video, i wanted her to have more pocket and she ignored me. Generally when she runs if i just check her and lift up she turns them herself, she needed a bit more help last night and I'm very proud of myself for helping her and not just being in the way! I KNOW she has another gear and one day will find it. Lol. We ran a 17.9 and a 16.88 was was winning it before slack. We left before slack so not sure how all that went.
