Thank you. I had done some reading but never really came up with a definitive answer as to which was better for what, just that they are both NSAIDs and banamine's anti-inflammatory agent is stronger than bute.

Banamine is designed to relax a horses digestive system during a colic episode to help
move any impaction or tummy ache ...

IMO ...it has slowly slipped over into the pain killer department which could have dangerous
results using it before or after extreme exercise ..

Yes they are both NSAIDS.

Bute works on two pathways to fight inflammation

Banamine works on one of the pathways. Banamine is also a smooth muscle relaxant, this is why it is used in colic, and founder over bute.

Previcoxx is the other NSAID people like to use as the short term studies show it is easier on the stomach, but again it isn't as potent as Bute as it only blocks one inflammatory pathway.

Bute for bones/joint pain.

Banimine for tissue/muscles issues.

Can you please elaborate on this? Bute and Banamine are both Cox-1 and Cox-2 inhibitors so, I'm confused on what you mean by Banamine only works on one pathway. Previcox is only a Cox-2, is that what you meant?

I'm not at home this weekend so I don't have access to my equine pharmacology text to explain it.

Which would you prefer to relieve minor hock discomfort for one run and why?

Before giving anything, you need to have your horse looked at by a qualified equine vet to see what is up with the hocks if anything. Just don't be giving this & that before you know any condition of your horse JMHO

Banamine over bute any day as long as you can administer properly.  1 run give an hour before run would only need 5cc or Banamine paste.  Bute over long periods does funky crap to their insides.  Aspirin is your best choice because it can be given everyday until you seek veterinary care.  Personally if you know the horse has a problem why risk it for 1 run.

Horses can be allergic to aspirin and it can be really serious, so like any medicine, try it at home first. My sister had a horse that was extremely allergic to aspirin.

I agree but it's rare. I had a horse once react badly to Bedadine his neck swelled up in front of my eyes in seconds. With any drug some will have reactions it's always a risk. I hope your sisters horse was okay after the reaction.

I think your vet would be able to answer this best.   I started using a vet that others around here like for performance issues and she is all about banamine no bute.  She was telling me about a study that showed it worked better where before bute would have been recommended and something about it not being as toxic as bute especially to the colon.  So far she has had me use it with a hoof abcess and sore hocks.  Worked very good and where one horse would get cinchy on bute didn't on banamine.
