Do you swing out to the right or go in a straight line to a spot right beside the barrel? I see a lot of higher level people sort of swinging out a little it seems.

Straight line directly to my pocket. I think you see the swinging out a lot with the young, futurity horses because they are still young and taught to over turn or finish a barrel. Not all! But most.

I aim to finish my 1st and run straight to my second. In slow work we over finish the 1st and make a corner turn and head straight to the second. My little horse has no issue with this, my bigger horse may take a small step out still, but I didn't pattern him so we're still working on it.

Prior to riding with Chris Martin I wouldn't have thought about it this way and would have given my big horse more pocket. His 1st and 2nd barrels yesterday showed this pretty well I thought.

I find it more difficult to keep them straight to the 3rd and not step out though, still working on it.

I mostly just hope like hell I can get my horses past it far enough to not hit it! LOL.

I too have noticed the way they seem to swing out before the second.  It looks fast and seems to work for them.

I learned one method at a Lance Graves clinic.

In slow work, 2nd and 3rd, you head directly at the barrel, as if to run over it.  Then, depending on your horses style, you swoop them out by lifting your hand, weight, and leg.  Stop and back up at your "spot".  The spot is closer to the barrel for free runners (maybe a 1/2 stride before the barrel)  and Past the barrel by a stride or 1.5 strides depending on how push style your horse is.  Then you over correct but stay straight coming out of the barrel with weight and pull towards the barrel.

Going faster, you don't swoop, you just run to your spot.  All slow speeds, walk, trot, lope you swoop.  Run is just to the spot.

I was always taught to over finish the first and run straight to my pocket. I don't think I've ever ridden straight to the barrel before. My gelding I have now was taught to do the same. Another reason I bought him.

I think the overcorrection on the lift and swoop going slow helps your hand stay up to hold their shoulder up going fast.  That's why you just go to the spot and sit going fast.

I was taught to over turn every barrel and go straight to your spot - train the way you will run.

I try to stay in line with the 2nd barrel until about half way and then typically start moving over for my pocket. I think every horse is different and a certain style will be faster for some.

You just have to do what is best for your horse.  The majority of horses I've had and/or trained ran right up in their pocket in a straight line.  I now have one that I'm training and she has to be picked up and moved over in order to turn her second barrel correctly.  She is very long-bodied and I figure this is the reason.  If I don't move her over, she will just run sideways and sling her butt.  I haven't run one that I had to move over like this in over 20 years, so it is really a challenge!

Thank you for explaining this!  I've watched Lance's tapes and Youtube runs and am actually going to get to ride with him this Sunday at the Horse Expo in Murfreesboro.   My first question to him was going to be something like, "explain to me the difference of how you ride in slow work versus how you ride in a run."  (Because you don't want a big swoop in a run) ...now I know.
