Guidance and input requested. I’m looking for feeding recommendations for my mare. She is 8 and in shape and good health. I am currently feeding her 1lb of Renew Gold per day, 4lbs (weighed with digital scale) of alfalfa cubes and lots of good quality hay. She looks great. Supplements: DAC Racing Formula, Equine Science Blood Builder, L-Lysine and DAC Cool Gut for ulcer maintenance.

I’ve tried to get in touch with the RG person but can’t get a returned call and gave up. BUT, I’ve heard that too much protein from the alfalfa can basically bog them down processing it. So I’m wondering if that might be what’s going on. Also, I’m kicking around changing back to a grain feed (low sugar content).

What are Feed recommendations to help a cold blooded horse has as much pep in their step as possible? She is never going to be a barn burner, but she could run harder.

TIA!

Your program looks good, what if you add a few oats to the RG. Send off a 1 lb sample to your lab and get an analysis done that way you know where your at. That should help WIN to point you in the right direction.
His RG was called the cadillac horse feed by my equine nutritionist just a week ago.

I have a lazy 4 year old.  I feed Hay-Rite, so alfalfa base, but have added oats and Red Cell.  It helps a tiny bit.  She shouuld be a fire breathing dragon, but no....  just a little bit more pep in every other step....

Thanks all! And yes, I would think mine should be a fire breathing dragon, too...but no.

So Oats is what I've been wondering about adding. Thank you.

Win, I will call you and discuss if you are available.

The Extreme use formulation of Renew Gold will be available by Feb 1st, and may be an application for this horse. It is slightly higher in digestible energy and has a few other advantages for highly active senior and extreme use performance horses. Not a Renew Gold replacement, but a targeted formulation for those kinds of horses.

I know this is a little off track, but have you run a blood panel on her?  Could be that she is low in iron or some other chemical imbalance that you may not be able to physically see, but would make her not want to have much fire.

I did earlier in the year, yes, and she was good. That's been on my radar though to do a repeat. :)

I'm just kind of thinking too many different supplements. I don't know DAC products well, but do they offer a more complete supplement? THE has one that offers most if not all that in 1 scoop. But on another hand, some horse just aren't peppy and will only run what they want to run.

I would love to hear what Win has to say about this. I feed RG and great Washington alfalfa and am curious if I should change anything. Have a spicy three year old and a lazy five year old. Hahaha. Both look great, BTW.

wow I'm in the SAME boat here! I feed Ultium and renew gold top dressed. Along with alfalfa hay. My mare has no pep in her step on the pattern whatsoever. I know she can flat out run as I've breezed her in the hay field! I have ruled out ulcers and lameness too. It's frustrating and I don't know what to start at going to the vet

I don't want to do an ad here, or pirate this good thread. I talked to the OP this afternoon, and we made some adjustments and she will be checking a few things with this horse. As to the new product, we are working on a banner ad here so we can talk about what is coming from two years of hard work. More info soon on that. Feel free to call me at the number posted above.
