How hot is too hot for you and your horse? At what temp do you say to yourself "it's just too hot" and sit out a barrel race?

I feel as though I've sat out a few shows this year already due to the heat (as well as rain).

I don't have a temp limit. But I will make darn sure to watch my horses for any signs of heat problems, make sure they drink water, and give electrolyte if needed.

We had 105 heat index this past weekend. It was miserable and I stayed home. That heat takes all the fun out of it. I know a lot of people that hauled, then scratched because of the heat. Seems like a waste, you knew it was going to be THAT hot before you hauled.

I don't know what's right or wrong.

We have dry heat here, so I'd say about 100 max. Kinda depends on clouds and humidity, but if I'm thinking in the back of my head that I don't want to go because it's so hot, I honestly don't. Pretty sure my horse appreciates it.

Having a black horse I think he gets hot a little faster than some others, so I don't do anything with him when it's above 90. I generally don't mess with the others when it's that hot either. I just don't like the heat myself & would rather not mess with them anyway lol.

Today.  This whole week.  Were looking at a show coming up on Sunday.  Calling for 96.  And with our humidity, it will feel
like 105.  So, no. We don't ride in this type of heat.

We adjust work load accordingly using those numbers. If we feel like we have to ride above 170* we usually just go for a walk around the pasture or something - this would be like this past week when they were cooped up due to rain and a wet slick lot, but it was crazy hot and humid, just a walk to stretch legs. Heck, I don’t want to work a whole lot harder than that either!

It's often still over 100Β° here when we start riding in the evening but it's starting to cool off and we have virtually no humidity most of the time. I've had heat/sun stroke enough that I'm a little sensitive to the heat & so if I'm okay it's a good bet that my horses are too. The key is to keep them hydrated and don't overwork or overheat them.Β

I don't like to ride in the heat either....say above 90. I will try and ride early in the morning or later in the evening.

With that being said, I am supposed to go to a weekend race this coming weekend and they are calling for 94 on Saturday and 97 on Sunday..... I'm debating on going or not......

Thanks for the chart. That is good info. It's been consistent 105-108 here but with 8% humidity. We can't buy rain right now n

The other night we were at "only 90" but 100% humidity. Cozy, warm, wet wool blanket feeling

That is gross. They say we have a dry heat. I will take the dry with higher temps, than lower temps with high humidity.

I saw this about a month ago. Using the 130 as a guide, that means we can safely ride in Texas starting maybe mid October but we'll have to quit in March.
