Location: Phoenix | These are located on the hind legs, on the side and back of the fetlock. Firm, but squishy to the touch, kind of like a nerf ball. Not painful to touch, and not lame. Worse on the left hind. ETA: he's around 20 years old. Any ideas?

| Those look like they could be, but I personally have never seen them that big, maybe it's the hair. when did they appear?

| Those are some big windpuffs! if they weren't soft and squishy I'd say he had a low bow, but being soft and not lame-windpuffs. He's really stretched the joint capsule surrounding the joint/tendon area so the joint produces more synovia to fill the area. |

| I would say the blood vessel is bulging, I would suggest getting an ultrasound. My money is saying not a wind puff |

Location: up to my waist in you know what | I have a mare who's leg looks exactly like that. Had it ultrasounded only to find out she tore her flexor tendon. Was obviously a old injury and there is calcification there. Cortisone shot helped with some swelling but it just came back. We still ride her but retired her from playdays due to the amount of calcification she has there. Will try to get a pic to show how identical it is to your horse. |

Thanks! We figured it's an old injury. He's turned out for the winter, and it's not bothering him but my brother doesn't think he will take him if he goes back to OK for spring quarter. I wonder if all the hard stops this summer made his flare up again? This is him in action:

Super nice gelding. I'd say more than likely, those hard stops put alot of stress on a horses fetlocks. Best bet would be to get some x-rays, consult with a vet and see if he would be sound for any more performances. |

Location: Midwest | my gelding has puffs in that area. It is a common area for older horses to have chronic swelling. But if you have doubts, get it checked out. In my horse, it is basically chronic swelling of the tendon sheath aka a windpuff

Heres a good article with more info: http://agwestvet.com/september-newsletter-lower-limb-swelling/ |

Location: South MS | My mare has the exact same thing on her left rear - she tore the joint capsule in the fetlock and that is how they look permanently now. She is sound - it just looks bad
