Welcome!  I am also in San Diego but don't have my horses with me.  They stayed in Washington when I moved down here.  Probably moving soon to be back with them....too expensive here in SD!  I'm not much help but maybe we can get drinks or something!  Or go cheesy horseback riding on the beach....there's tons of Groupons for those kind iof things.  :)

I suggest lessons, and investing in a beginner friendly barrel horse.

This! :) WELCOME! I agree, get a beginner barrel horse, and get lessons on that horse. Build a comfortable relationship and start with some smaller shows to get your feet wet when you're ready! It takes a lot of work but it's worth it!

And remember that everyone was a rookie in the beginning of their riding. So don't get discouraged thinking that you will never be as good as anybody else there. We have all been there. Just start going and have fun and get to know the people there and make friends.  And Welcome to BHW . Come join in on the blogs. We are just a big family here. Their are some very knowlegdable people here to answer any questions that you might have.

Also in mention to the horse, find someone reputable that you can either lease or buy from. A good trainer/seller is priceless!

I would start with a been- there- done- that horse! Propably a horse with some age on it that has seen and done it all and is patient! You don't want a speed ball to start on, that is for sure! Also finding a good trainer is even more important.

Welcome to BHW

Welcome!

I always wanted to run barrels but wasn't financially able to until I was 27. Don't let anything or anyone discourage you.

Don't be afraid of an older horse - upper teens, even lower 20's. If they've been there, done that, safe, bomb-proof, forgiving, beginner-friendly...all that stuff...you're golden. The first horse I bought was a 17 year old one-eyed appy/QH (grade) mare. She taught me more than I can put into words & allowed me to make so many mistakes with total forgiveness.

Good luck!
