That is my question ?  How long will a barrel horse last?  Given good/excellent care, some mainteance,  etc.
4-5 yrs, 10 yrs, more than 10,  etc... thanks, just asking and have been thinking about it.

We have a horse here in VA that I'd never heard of, age 17, come on the scene with a new (to us, VA NBHA) rider and started kicking tush and taking names this year.

I know BF Shenannigan is no youngster, nor is Gay Bar Cassanova, and the Ropers win a lot of shows with those two.

Good care, time off when needed, and good conditioning will keep most horses running well into their teens.  Their peek years SHOULD be 8-12.

I think it depends on the horse. My one horse is 18. I have had him since he was 8 and have been running him since we bought him. He is know my mothers horse and shes actually been beating me on my youngster. He ran his fastest time 2 weekends ago and pulls checks most shows. He has minimal arthritis but could outlast many younger horses.

I wonder this as well.  I know it depends on the horse and the care he gets, but still curious in general.  I know a horse around here that has been running for a good eight years.  And I'm sure longer then that because the horse is 20 this year and going to be retired.  I doubt that horse was started on  the pattern as a 12 year old.

I have an 11 year old (wasn't started until he was 5) that I don't think has really ever been ran consistently (as in 3-4 runs a month) in the six years of his career... So I'm really hoping he can go for longer than 8!

There is no good answer. It just depends on the horse. Some horses can make 4 runs a weekend, never get anything accept hay and water and last until they are 25 and start running when they are 3. Others receive the best care with supplements and everything you can think of and are dead lame for no reason.

I have a nice horse used to make kick a?? Runs and sliped on some bad ground was a indoor and you had to,run in 4 of 5 horses in drag slipped. But my horses rear slipped out from under her at the second and tore her stifle up. Done still sound everywhere else, was 16. Decided not to, to fix, because of her age, plus did not know if the fix would work as there no guarantees. I have a nice yearling. She gave me a carbon copy of her. I love her and she gave 12 god years probably less than 5 barrels down in her life.

Heart, mind, good confirmation, good care, no career ending injuries- a long career well over 10 or 15  years.

Lauren's ( casual dust) sister had a gelding that could smoke a 1D run in any competiton, he was in his 20's.

My gelding Nate is 20 this year.  I bought him right before he turned 5.  He's always been a 2D-3D horse and still is!  He gets PHT magnetic therapy, regular chiro, and a joint supplement. Never been injected.

Every horse has a Magic Numer of runs in it barring a catastrophic injury. No one knows what that number is for sure, but it is a real pet peeve of mine when I see people that exhibition the heck out of a horse that is seasoned and does not need it. OR, they run them constantly hard at home. Do they not realize they are getting closer to finding their horses number with wasted runs.

A friend of mine has a horse that won futurities and is 21 or 22 now and still running low 17 second standard patterns and even ran the fastest time at a very competitive 2 day race, she just cant run the horse as often.

I hve been running the same two horses for the last 10 years. They are 17 and 20 this year. Still running tough with no issues. I might retire them next year. I hve some young guns ready to replace them but it is sooo nice to jump on the old solid ones and make the same run every time.

One I trained and sold has been running for 15 years and is still going.  I know some that have been running for 20 or more.  Some of it is good care, and some of it is luck.  My Rambo was a 1d horse for 10 years, but got hurt bad enough when he was 18 that I retired him.  He wasn't sound the last 3 years that I ran him, but he was still clocking--experience can trump ability.

The mare I run is 20. She shows no signs of slowing down. She runs 1D locally. She has been taken care of her whole life. My sister in law runs a mare who is 21 and she is also 1D and very competitive. They both have older bloodlines and I think that plays a big part too. Neither of them have any big lameness issues either. We both keep them in good shape, good feed. Stay out of their way and let them work, I just have to hold on..lol!!

I have a friend that has a 28 year old that has been on barrels since he was 6 and he can still draw 2D checks. She only runs him about 12-15 times a summer and the rest of the time just trail rides and team pens on him.

It depends on luck.  I took the best care and spared no expense and my grey horse only ran for 2 years before he fractured his extensor process.  You can bubblewrap them but s**t happens.
