| You hear of racehorses having a goat as a friend. Does anyone use a goat for their horse's traveling companion in the barrel racing world? Interested to know if anyone does this and takes the goats to rodeos or super shows with their horse. What type and gender goat is best? |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Yep. A young lady and her friends take a goat with them. This goat will follow them while they ride through the streets ... just like a dog. I had a pygmy that picked my black mare to buddy up the most. When she layed down he was laying on her back. when she was getting up he would plant himself in the middle of her back and stay there he layed on her back while she was eating or walking around. I would take her out to saddle up . the goat would follow jump on the fender of the trailer and jump on to her back. When it rained he stood under her belly. he got along with the other horses just as much. he was a hoot. Goats are awesome. |

Location: Arkansas | My grandpa kept goats with his racehorses. My Mom visited with Leslie Willis at the BBR while waiting to see Dr. Ford. She had the goat with her horse even to see the vet. IMO, its cheaper and better than meds! We have a goat that runs with our horses. SHE lets us know when they are doing something they shouldn't or she thinks they shouldn't be (getting out, into feed, running the pastures), lol.. |

| No goat. But we did get Vegas her own mini pony. I know on the track, goats tend to disappear. If I were getting a goat, I'd probably look into a willie (neutered male). I'd stick with a dairy breed or dairy cross. Less likely to end up on someone's grill than a meat goat. Most pygmys I've been around are crazy or mean. You definitely want one that's been well handled from birth. Goats are pretty pricey right now. If you go to a sale barn, don't go to the first sale of the month. That's when the prices are really high on goats. Or around holidays (especially Muslim ones). |

Location: Kansas | I have thought about it because Clifford does not handle being alone very well, but so far I haven't given him a goat of his own. It might be worth trying because he is a nightmare if I leave him alone at the trailer even for a few minutes. He used to eat with a nanny goat we call Sweetcakes but she has grown up and is now out with the rest of the goats all the time. |

| I tried it. Didn't work for me personally. Goat bonded to horse, horse didn't bond to goat. I do know it has worked for some because it was recommended to me for a buddy sour horse. |

Pardon my ignorance, but I have never been anywhere that someone has a goat with them. LOL
You can just throw them in the back of the trailer or stick them in a large dog crate. I personally think a mini pony is a better option. It's easier for a horse to bond to another equine than it is a goat. |

| The lady who won our NBHA state show in 2013 and then won the entire Senior 1D at our state show in 2014 hauls a goat around with her to shows.
Some places won't let you have any other animal in the stall with your horse so always check before you go. |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | I think if a horse HAS to have a buddy, a mini or pony is the better option. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my goats, however, some of the horses...Not so much! Some of the horses love them, others want to take a chunk out of them.. I would also be concerned for the goat if you were somewhere where you had to tie to the trailer rather than use a stall. What would you do with the goat? Sure, goats can be tied up, but, the way everyones dang dogs always run a muck, that isn't really safe for the goat. |
