Horse ran smack into the back of a gator and has a bruised and swollen chest with a few scratches. Currently turned out in a small dry lot to walk, banamine, and poulticed with ice tight to try and get the fluid to go down.
Also contacted a lady to meet up next week that has a magna wave. But until then I want that swelling down ASAP.

Please post remedies if ya got em.....

Several years ago my gelding went through a wood fence and tore his chest open.  My daughter went to feed, came back in and said Odie has blood on his chest- went out to find a 6 inch hole in his chest.  This was 2 months before state finals.  Vet stitched him up and sent us home with instructions to cold hose and also sent a dmso/dex mix to help with swelling and had bute for a week.  His whole chest was swollen.   If you have any FM11 it is a miracle worker for getting swelling out, best if you can wrap the area so don't know how that work on a chest.
Good luck.

Swelling is a normal reaction to soft tissue trauma. It's a result of the inflammatory response to tissue injury. I wouldn't do more than hose it down with cool water. If there is bleeding in the soft tissues or a hematoma, then the cool water will tend to limit the bleeding. It will all be reabsorbed.

Yes, I think it was mixed with furazone to make a paste- it has been a few years.  I put the rub on a night and hosed during the day.   He healed fast.
Good luck with your guy.

I know. Dex for sure won't do anything. What I recommended is the same thing I would recommend in people. I don't tell people to put DMSO on bruises, swellings, or hematomas. It can have serious side effects. It's cheap, and probably won't hurt though. If you are using the DMSO as a way to get dex to absorb and get to the swelling, I understand but you really don't need dex. Dex actually impairs healing.

I thought dex was for swelling?  Maybe I am remembering wrong, I sure don't want to give bad advice, listen to Doc.

He has been cold hosed and left alone for 3 days but the fluid build up is getting major and we are trying to prevent the need to drain the hematoma. I actually have DMSO/furacine/ and powdered dex mix from awhile ago I might use it but its such a broad area and we want him out moving on it not standing still....scared of a sun burn...so probably just gonna try some massage until we can get to a magna wave.

I agree swelling and fluid is good to help heal but we are wanting to decrease it before it because a bigger problem in this case.

Yes, it can reduce swelling, but if there is actual significant tissue damage it just delays actual healing. I understand where you are coming from....just thinking more about the injury aspects, if any. This is why we don't give steroids for sprained ankles, for instance. The swelling and pain may be lessened, but if there is ligament damage, it can slow the actual healing.
I just hate to see people start giving dex/DMSO everytime there is soft tissue injuries that we see almost every day. Basically, in my opinion, it's meddlesome. There is a place for it.....just not here. Also, the DMSO will do absolutely nothing to lessen the hematoma......except maybe make it more prone to abscess formation. Also, be careful when considering draining this thing. Then you run the risk of converting a sterile hematoma into an abscess.

Its a bruise with a few small scratches from the blunt force that has creating drainage between the legs and is rubbing the legs. Vets course of treatment is to relieve as much swelling as possible. Clear X-rays...

I would stay away from dex as well as it can cause founder and can actually shorten a horses lifespan, the things vets don't go into detail with.

It sounds you are doing everything right

This! During a very very bad storm years ago, our horses starting running and ran through a fence. My mare broad chested a T post head on. She ended up with so much swelling and hematoma that she had a large lumpy mass hanging between her front legs downwards about 6 inches. It was horrible looking. Vet said to keep it cold water hosed, limit the walking, some bute for pain, gave me some spray on stuff called Moxi for pain and inflamation and to leave her alone. It went down in about a week and she never had any issues with it.

Β My mare was kicked in the chest during the winter. It balooned up horribly. So I had to cold hose three times a day in the middle of winter. It sucked, but it worked. Cold hosing is my go to remedy for swelling of most every kind.
