It just smells fishy to me, but I have a family member that is buying chances to win |

I don't think there's anything fishy about it.
A friend of mine has one going on right now. Selling 30 tickets at $100 a piece for a horse. When all 30 are sold she'll draw, winner gets the horse. OR same horse can be bought for $3k without having to wait for the drawing (I assume she would refund everyone who bought a ticket in that instance.)
Is the horse worth the $3k? Eh, maybe she would get it, maybe she wouldn't if she just listed her out right. But she'll definitely get it this way.
This friend is a self-proclaimed horse trader. She sells a lot of horses the old fashioned way, some by auction, now she's trying out this raffle. Whatever way gets her the money she needs out of the sale. |

Location: In my own world | If it's on the up and up then yes it's a good marketing tool. But with all the scammers out there I would just be worried that the horse didn't even exist and since they aren't ripping one person off for a large amount of money it wouldn't get much help with the legal system.
And I just wouldn't feel comfortable buying a horse that way. |

Location: Kansas | There is a facebook group that does that but with tack. I'm in it, I've bought a couple of slots on a few of the tack listings. I lose though LMFAO. But the more slots you buy, the better of a chance you have at winning. Just gotta get lucky enough, which my luck is terrible LOL. |

| I saw someone on fb doing this with their horse. I thought it was neat, but I know there are people who will try to scam others. Maybe if it was someone I knew personally or a well known trainer, I'd consider it. |

I don't trust many either. Now for tack I might do something like this. But I like to ride my horses before I buy if I can. Then I did the math on one. One raffle is selling 100 tickets at $140 each for a grade mare. $14000? And then I saw one for a horse trailer with a LQ. No way!! |

And on them raffling off a horse you know noting about, how does one know where the horse came from, it could have come out of a sale yard somewhere and may have a bad rap sheet are worst. You just never know... |

This can happen anytime you buy a horse, regardless of how you purchase it. Obviously you would want to do your homework beforehand, just like with any other purchase. |

Thats why I dont do raffles that I dont know anything about, I do do my homework when I plan on buying.  |

My husband went in on a $40/ticket raffle and won a Phantom 3 drone thats worth like $1300. These guys are super strict with rules and such and very professional. Everything through paypal. Its legit if its done right. |

I believe that is so that if someone is ticked off about not winning, that they can't just file a dispute with paypal for a refund. Which wouldn't be fair to those who paid into the pot as well. |
