Do you give time off when treating for ulcers? Specifically fore and hind gut ulcers (succeed test confirmed). I am treating with omeprazole, should I give a couple weeks off as well? Should I add anything else to make sure they are healed?

Omeprazole doesn't treat hindgut ulcers, at least that is what I have read. For my mare that had hindgut ulcers I used Succeed the first time, but this last time I have used Gut Health and am pleased with the results. THE had an ulcer treatment that my sister used and loved. I believe it treats both fore and hindgut ulcers. Cur Ost Stomach and Adapt have also worked for me in the past on a different horse.

Yes, the website is basicequinehealth.com
They have several different formulas. I have been giving it to my mare for a month and she has not been stretching way out and her appetite and attitude are good.

Did you keep riding or did you give time off? Take time off from hauling?

I don't compete on her, but I didn't change anything, just added the supplement. She gets upset when I take her buddy away. I took her buddy away gave her the supplement and she is doing great. She has other pasture mates to run with but she is just too attached to one. I did give her a several days off from work to let the supplement take hold because she was really hurting - stretching way out, depressed and off feed.

THE GastroPLUS works well on hind gut ulcers. I have customers that don't necessarily stop riding, but usually don't haul and compete while treating ulcers. If you are interested in more info on GastroPLUS shoot me a message. $110 shipped when ordered through me

I went easy on my mare when I treated her for ulcers but she wasnt displaying behavioral problems so I still exercised her. If I was treating a horse that maybe had a bad gate issue or was just generally anxious all the time I would probably give them time to decompress and let the medicine kick in.

I just had one at the vet for ulcers. He gave me 5 tubes of Gastro Gard--one a day for five days. They are labeled FOUR DOSES. Vet said she had to have the good stuf for five days. The vet did not say stay off her and she gets ridden hard everyday. We are going to put her on a new Purina product called OUTLAST. Purina has asked my trainer to try several new products so we will see what happens.

My vet told me the succeed hind gut test was basically hog wash. Totally unreliable and that 90 percent come back positive. And guess what, it's put out by the same company you would buy the supplement from to treat it.

We gave our mare a couple of weeks off (she's a very anxious type) and also started her on ViaCalm in addition to the ulcer supplements she's on. The vet said we should not only treat the problem, but what's causing the problem. Her anxiety.

I've had really awsome luck with DAC cool gut and aloe vera juice! I saw a change in my guy that had them horribly in under 2 weeks. He was also very more willing. I didnt give him time off just kept riding as normal. Very afforable as well!

I've always kept riding unless they were in physical discomfort from ulcers. You will see best results if you take them completely off of grain while treating and feed hay 24/7, preferably alfalfa.

Time off.  If they are experiencing ulcer symptoms and have a true and accurate diagnosis of ulcers, they need time off to de-stress and heal.

Thank you all! I do not feed processed feeds, I bought the horse about 2 weeks ago and I suspect she had ulcers when I got her. Took her to the vet, decided to treat for ulcers and manage a cyst in her ovary. I feed alfalfa and hay (the horse is also on 24/7 turn out). Treating with hormones and omeprazole for now. Added some aloe juice to her feed. It has been 3 days and I can see a huge difference in her. Any other suggestions?
