I have a friend who has it in their herd & we have one that gets it every winter too. I guess a lot of the time it is assumed to be rain rot. It is very contagious. If one horse has it & they get bit it can be passed on. The difference between the herpes & rain rot is if you peel the scab off you will notice its crusty & kinda yellow, really a lot like cold sores on humans. Up here it comes about in the winter mostly, when hay is being fed as it lacks in natural lysine which green grass has. That being said you can feed lysine in the winter months to control it. Or we just keep our guy separate from the others in the winter so it isn't passed on to the other horses & he is older & doesn't get rode in the winter anyway. The feed lysine isn't commonly sold in the feed stores they would probably have to bring it.

I only have experience with the lesser form though. I know on the severe end there are major respiratory issues & strict measures need to be taken not to spread it. I hope your friend doesn't have that. I'm just going off what our vet has explained to us for our situation with the skin sores. I'm interested in seeing more info posted on this too.

so far there is no scabs, they took the horse to the vet and a pannel was ran by accident so this is how they found out, they thought she just had a cold. So far its only a runny nose but that has since stopped and she is back to normal.

Ok sorry, I guess my info is not of much use. Good luck I hope your friends horse is in clear now. Just curious though, if you know, what did the vet say about treatment & contagiousness?

The vet said its like a human herpes and contagious when her nose is runny, as far as treatment they said there is nothing you can give them for it? i told her to get a second opinion on that.

This describes my broodmare's skin issues.  I started giving her a coat supplement recommended on here three weeks ago and she is much better.  Is there anything else I can do?  Come to think of it she started itching after the last time she was bred.

High doses of lysine. Make sure your lysine dosage is more than the amount of arginine in the diet.

This has been around for years and is common in horses who have been over-vaccinated. Back soreness, stocking up and sores under the lips are common symptoms.

Thank you, what if the horse is young, she has only had her 5way shot and regular worming, no soreness or sores just a runny nose?

Will herpes cause one to quit running hard and be a bit dull in their attitude?
And can it affect their ability to hold weight?

Isn't this the virus about 3-4 years ago caused the chaos in our area the cutting/cow horse barn had it some horses had to be put down as they were showing neurological symptoms. This was right before Calgary as the borders were closed for horses entering Canada but Calgary got them to reopen the boarders.
