 be marketable?
I'm looking at a mare and her unstarted 5yr old daughter might be part of the package. It will cost the same to ship one vs both.

The filly has some nice bloodlines, sire is AAA stakes placed or maybe even a stakes winner. Stakes sire, proven barrel sire. She has a full brother that is a world show qualifier in barrel racing. Both have been in a home where they are just hanging around, but well fed. The filly has been halter broke, lunged, sacked out some. Even saddled. They just don't know how to start one so haven't been on her.

I can find someone that can get her riding, most of it will be ranching, moving cattle and checking calving cows. I don't ride filly's if I can help it so will re sell her once she is riding. Is her age going to affect it much if she is riding nice? She's obviously above and beyond futurity age, but her sire isn't nominated to anything anyways.

IMO, she won't bring as much being an older green broke prospect, but there is definitely a market for her.  When I'm looking for something to go on with and not have to wait for them to grow up, 4-6 years old and green broke is right up my alley.

Well that is good to know. We don't even pull ours in from pasture until they are 3 in the spring and lately it has been fall before the people have been able to get them riding. So then they get the winter off because it is so crappy here in the winter and I have a green broke 4yr old. They seem to really retain what they have learned though and are easy to start to pattern. I would prefer them done in the spring though. The nice thing is they are old enough you can actually RIDE them and if they need some extra work, you can do it without worrying about hurting them.
5 is older than I expected. I was told 4, but she turns 5 in March. I have a guy in mind that I know won't shy away from a 5yr old unstarted horse...most will. She has had a lot of handling by the sounds of it, so that is nice to know.

probably not very marketable if you are looking to make much , even if you put 30-60 days on her........just have to find the right buyer though........

I agree...she might not being as much being a little older but I don't think you will have a problem selling her. I personally like the older ones more....they seek to be a little more mature.

I think if you sell her locally you could probably get decent money for her. Especially if someone is seeing her progress and really likes her.

I'm not going to be asking a lot, but as soon as I get her (if I do) I plan to get her sent off asap and then will start to advertise her immediatly. I hate for her to just be made a broodmare. She is bred nice enough to be given a chance at a job.

and just to be funny, her great great great great great grand dam won the Acorn stks and the Kentucky Oaks (KY Derby for fillies). Her great great great great great great granddam won the Kentucky Jockey Club stks and her, ok 7 greats grand dam won the Preakness (4th filly in history to do so at the time).

Her 1st and 2nd dam have produced as well, I just get a kick out of seeing ads with the BIG winners 5 generations back.

A few years ago, I gave $5500 for a 6 year old with about 4 months riding on him.  He had spectacular papers.  He didn't end up being a spectacular barrel horse, but he was easy to train and fun.

I'm not sure what the value of a horse like this is, but this is the type of horse I'm always on the lookout for because they tend to be good deals for someone willing and able to put the time into them. Sounds like the papers are good enough to make it worth owning her (since she's a mare I think that the good papers will be a positive when trying to get her sold). Just be realistic about how much time and money you're willing to put into her, training and feed bills start adding up.

A couple years ago I traded for a gelding that had decent papers, was 7 years old and maybe had a good 60-90 days on him. We were told he had been rode more, but that is another conversation. He took to things very easily and is super smart. I got pregnant right after getting him, so hubby started heeling on him a bit until after I had my baby. I started him on the barrels in the fall and after 30 days took him to a jackpot where he ran in the 2D. Because he was older I think his mind was a little more mature and it was easier for him.

If the horse is part of the package and you don't have extra shipping expenses, I would say it is worth a shot and give her a chance. You just never know what she will be until you try.

If her papers were good enough, I wouldn't hesitate to buy her.
Other than not being futurity eligible, her value won't have taken too much of a nosedive.  Sounds like she's been handled a good amount.

I'm not big on futurities, so when I look for my next one to bring along something like her would fall on my radar for sure, especially if she is level headed and picks up new ideas quickly. I don't mind later starts as long as they are started right.

You can sell anything for the right price... something that old and green broke is a bit of a turn off... but the fact she has papers is a plus. If you want the hassle of putting work into her then waiting for her to sell in this market ... go for it.

I completely agree with Three Luck. Not as marketable as a 5 yr old with some miles, but there is a market for her. I personally prefer them a little less trained because I can finish my way as opposed to retraining. I would pay more for a mare than a gelding like this.
I however bought a completely green 5 yr old this August.....no sackinging, lunging nothing and he has been the best "project" buy I have yet...but he is a keeper.

Same here.  I would rather she not be ridden and be a clean slate so to speak, especially if they weren't confident in starting her themselves.  If you have someone to ride her and start her right then go for it.  If she has good papers and put together nice I'm sure someone will buy her.
