I drive by a pasture that faces the freeway about once a week. For the past 2 weeks I have noticed a horse standing tied to a fence...all day and all night. he was out with anothr horse about 2 pm today. the other horse was free but he was tied and laying down. Drove back by at dark tonight and he was still tied but the other horse was gone (maybe put up in a stall).

I cant say the horse looks thin but he sure looks bored and sad. also the pasture is basically a junkyard.

what would ypu do? I cant stop thinking about that horse.

I don't know. When we went to south TX last April, we saw some of the sorriest looking horses tied everywhere so they could eat, trees in town, along the ditches, by bridges. Just everywhere. Not sure what they did for water in that heat. It was over 100 degrees one day we were there.

To me and to alot of others this would be horse abuse, but to the ones that dont know sheets about horses, would call it training I bet.

If he's fed and watered, not thin or shivering from cold weather why is it abuse? Horses don't get to move around much when kept in a stall most of the time-would you call that abuse? Is it the perfect world for them-no, but who lives in a perfect world.

Do they just lack pasture or stalls or were they doing it for feed? I would say at all the different places we looked at horses (5-6) only 2 were they well fed and looked good. We looked at a Panther Mountain mare that may have been a good one, but the thinner made mares just don't cut it living out in WY pastures so we passed on her. She was so thin, it was impossible to tell if she was made that way as well or just from being so thin.

I know a trainer that keeps hers tied to tall branches in trees for the 30 days she has them. Not enough stalls at her place (4 maybe). I didn't know that when I sent mine. 2 weeks later I went and got her. It seems for some people it is the norm. I would get the sheriff or someone to check though. Couldn't hurt

We've tied horses up for days but not weeks. Although unless he is thin, lack of water, feed, or any serious injuries I don't think you have a case. Wouldn't hurt to take a closer look at him though.

My BF has been known to leave his tied all weekend.  They are fed, and offered water several times.  He has a rope hanging from a tree that allows them to walk about a 10' circle; that's for the babies to learn patience without damaging the fence, trailer, or themselves.  So if you drove by, it may look like they have nothing, but trust me they are well cared for.
Sometimes they are even saddled (GASP!

Thanks for the replies. ?I am not sure if it is abuse or not. I will go take a closer look at him. Its hard to tell much about his condition driving by on the freeway. I can think of good reasons for leaving one tied but having him tied for so long does not seem right to me either.

Hey, if you have a bad gut feeling about it, check it out.  The worst that can happen is that you are a caring horse person.  And if the person loves horses also, they should understand.  What I might do, is see if I see the horse laying down again, and go up and tell them you think he's colicing and act worried.  Then they may give an explanation to why he's tied up.  If he appears healthy, carry on.  If not, report it.

Maybe he beats up on the other horse and they have no where else to put him right now. or maybe they work longer shifts than you do  get up earlier and tie him up every morning turning him loose when they get home.  but checking a little closer would not hurt.

A lot of these horses you see staked out belong to crummy people that would rather use money for their drugs and booze then to buy feed or hay, and then some do have pasture but they are so over grazed, and most of these people rather see these poor animals strave then give them to a home that will feed them. And yes this is how they feed their horse. So sad
