Would like opinions of individuals who have used Adequan or Legend or both and your experiences. I have a couple of horses that need something, but I am unsure which would be best for their situations. Feed supplements do not work in our situation as we have 30 head that are turned together and when fed in large bunks, it is survival of the fittest. The older horses get their fair share, but there is no way to supplement one horse.
One horse i am referring to is a 22 yr old kids horse that is used for jr rodeos, etc. He is extremely broke and has been well used...many sliding stops, roping, etc. He is not lame at all but stiff and his joints pop and he gets a little peggy in the front-end.
The other horse I am referring to is a 12 year old barrel horse (ranch horse till he was 8) that is not lame but is stiff in the front end when I first get on, but warms out of it.
I am thinking some arthritis might be the cause of both of the above horses symptoms, but not sure which injection would be best for them. I like the longer effects of Adequan and since our main hauling/using time is May - August, I don't want to be doing this year round.
Also, how long do you go before you re-dose (after the initial series to get the full effect) on each of the above injections?
Also, how long before you want to see results do you start the injections?
Thank you!

Me too. The way I was taught is give 1 shot a week for 1 month. Then after that I usually give 1 a month. When I buy the bottle, it comes out to about $5 per shot, which ain't bad compared to the others.

It's 2 or 2.5 ml I think, and you give it in the muscle, so no biggie to give.

I use both. My understanding of it was that they different joints and some joints better than others. I would like to know more too. I think I was told that Adequan was for above the knee joint problems and Legend was good at getting to joints below the knee. More horses move great so I am happy but I would love more information.

I was told by my vet to use 5ml once a week every week. Witch still isn't bad bc that's 20 shots . And the bottle isn't expensive

I like using Adequan and give it once a month, my vet has it in stock but not the bottle and its about $40-50 a shot. There is no generic Adequan! There are knock offs but they are nothing compared to the real thing, for awhile I couldn't get Adequan and tried ALL the knock offs and my horse sat because he was still sore a lot where as on Adequan he was fine and I didn't notice any soreness.

If I was made of money Legend, hands down!  But since I am not and like the science behind it look into Pentosan.  Actually promotes "cleaning" of arthritis.  If you buy through Wedgewood Pharmacy (with a vet perscription) you're looking at $10 per month per horse after the initial weekly dose for a month startup.

Edited to add that if you are buying compounded anything.  Compare ingredients and the percentages on bottles, its like the difference between advil and ibuprofen, same drug, cheaper company but still 200 mg tablets.

I don't know if ichon is a generic or not. It's cheaper and has the same active ingredients in th same dosage

Each 5 ml of Adequan IM Equine contains 500 mg of Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan

Ichon is a sterile 5mL solution containing 500mg of Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan (100mg/mL). For use on cats, dogs, and horses.

That's interesting that your vet said its the same, I am actually a bit jealous it worked as well as Adequan for you as I wish it would have for my gelding when it was hard to find any Adequan available. Here is an interesting off-shoot of the Adequan website talking about how there are no generics and the research ect behind it.

I can't say whether it works better or not. I started my now 5 yr old on it as a 4 yr old for prevention.

And as as far as it being cheaper, idk. I guess if you compare it to the individual shots of Adequan. But when I got my Adequan the first time it was $383 for the 10 dose bottle and still is this price from Valley Vet today. When I went to get the Ichon a few weeks ago (different vet) they wanted $435 for 10 individual doses of Ichon. I said WHAT?  They gave it to me for the same price as the Adequan and I don't think it comes in a multiodse    bottle like the Adequan

and to add just so you don't think I run from vet to vet,my mare was at a a trainer, got an articular leision in her stifle, trainer vet put her on Adequan and they sent the bottle home with her, that's how I got it, but my vet here agreed it was a good prevention supplement and cheaper than some oral ones. The only one he recommends is CosequinASU, it's $60 a month

We had a 26 year old on Adequan and he was moving like a  2 year old and feeling good.  Can't speak for the Legend or the generics.

My vet reccomends both adequan and legend.  I give both.  I give adequan at the first of the month and legend the last week of the month.  I also feed Platinum CJ and Silicon.  For my open mare she gets Longevity also.  This works great.

My vet recommends PentAussie so that's what i give my 21 year old who acts like he's 6! i never saw a difference with a feed through supplement, started giving pentaussie and i LOVE it.
I will never go back to a feed through joint product!
