My mare's due date is April 5 so she is at roughly 284 days - 58 days to go. For the last 4 days her udders have looked like this. This morning, one was more swollen than the other but they have seemed to even out as the day has gone by.  The swollen part on the sides are rock hard. Is this normal at this stage? There is no heat in them and she isnt sensitive at all. I cant say I've ever felt milk filled udders before but I never thought they would be hard.  I called my vet and she seems to think there is nothing to worry about as long as she doesnt have any vaginal discharge but it still concerns me some.

Looks like she has some ventral edema.  Kinda like when a pregnant woman gets swollen ankles and feet, they retain water and it goes to the lowest point.

I would check with your vet to be sure but I wouldn't worry too much, I've seen worse.

I have had my girls look like this 6 plus weeks out. My maiden last year had it a long time. It looks like she's on track. If anything maybe a bit early but I'm betting she will be fine.

She has had some edema off and on for the past few months, even some in her back legs so it seems like thats fairly normal for her. She is maiden so I had no idea what to expect (still dont obviously). I just dont want to ignore something when it needs attention. But im glad you guys dont think its anything too serious. That makes me feel better.

Looks normal to me. Maybe a tad early then what I would expect but not anything that would have me overly worried, just watching. and there are 2 big veins that run along the underside of the belly they call milk veins. I have one mare that those get HUGE. That is what you are seeing running along her belly. But her bag should just grow and shrink like that until she is ready to go. Then it will stay firm.

Just because YOU say she is "due" April 5th, she could easily go 2 or 3 WEEKS before that. (Without being "early".) Looks totally normal to me.

I agree with everyone else :)  Our broodies have such a wide, wide range of what is normal, that it can be frustrating and nerve wracking.  In my band and in other folks' mares, I have seen mares' bags look just like yours anywhere from 10 weeks out to just a couple weeks out.  Every mare has a different schedule, and none of them seem to have the books on what they are supposed to do and when.  Have you felt the baby move every day?

It never hurts to share your concern with the vet.  It all looks and sounds normal to me, but you know her best!

My mare is due mid to end of April.  Last week her bag changed and got about like what your posting.  Made me excited because Spring must be coming along with a baby!

Thanks you! I'll be out of town two weeks before her due date so I'm hoping she holds off at least until I get back home. I'll be a mess the whole time I'm gone.

She looks fine :).

I looked at one of mine who's due april 16th. She looks like she may be starting a tiny bag but I doubt it. I think she just looks different because she nursed a foal last spring. My other mare due April 14 doesn't have one at all.

My broodies are starting to get boobies again...just a little more substance and firmness in them I noticed today...they are all 8 to 10 weeks out and this is pretty typical for them... hormones are changing and foals sre growing about a pound per day now so justthe early signs of it all :) makes me anxious!!!!
