Location: In Ky following Barrel Races & Walker hounds. | If you are friends with me on facebook you already saw, but for those who are not, the 17th my husband got a call that his father(who was in NC visiting his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and mother in law) was being lifeflighted after passing out and stopping breathing twice.. While I was inside the house getting our bags packed and ready to leave to head out there, within 30 minutes he got a call back saying he was gone. EMTs and emergency room nurses did all they could, but he was too far gone.
He left Kentucky approximately 5AM, made it out there at around 12, spent the day with the family, watched the Preakness with his daughters(who both said they had not seen him so excited about a horse race since he retired from training in 2010). He got up to go change clothes because he was hot, my mother in law went to check on him and tell him to wash up for supper when he told her he thought he was going to faint, she got out "What do you mean you're going to faint?" and he went back on her. They called 911 and thank goodness my sister in laws husband had went with her this trip, he drove my MIL to the hospital and stayed right with her the entire time until the rest of the family got there. The cause was determined to be a massive heart attack. He was probably gone way before we got the call, but they kept trying for my MIL, she did not want them to call it until she was sure in her mind. They were married 46years.
I have never felt more heartbroken for someone as I have my husband, his mother, and his siblings. I loved that man dearly..Dont get me wrong, we butted heads like bull calves, but I considered myself very lucky to have him for a father in law. He always said I was his favorite daughter in law because I was brutally honest and didnt take his crap lol.
My husband and I were the only family he had within 5 hours, so we spent a LOT of time together. The man was a walking equine text book. I always said I was going to sit and take notes one day. Now I wish I had.
We saw a picture of him taken with 2 of his grandkids before he passed away, his eyes and face looked so drained... and his left hand was badly swollen(nobody noticed until they saw the picture). I am so glad he made it all the way there before it happened and he got a few good hours with his family.
I never dreamed friday night would be the last time we would see him. My husband was checking his voicemail last week when we were in NC with his mom, there was one from his dad saying that he made it and he loved us, Dustin said he sounded really tired, or drained, not like himself.
So sorry for the book, I am still in shock and disbelief about the whole thing. It feels like a bad nightmare. Dustin feels completely lost, he went back to work today, hopefully that will keep his mind off of things a bit.
Just wanted to update everyone who does not have FB on what has been going on. I wish it were a better update from us. |

Location: In Ky following Barrel Races & Walker hounds. | Thank you all... I bawled like a baby last night while I cleaned up my coffee maker and put it away... I dont drink coffee unless I have someone to drink it with.. He was my coffee drinking buddy. My husband doesn't like it, so no reason to have it sitting out taking up space if its not going to be used unless someone who drinks coffee comes to visit. I felt stupid crying over putting a kitchen appliance away, but we had a lot of nice mornings and cold evenings spent talking and drinking coffee...
My husband keeps asking when the urge to call him or go tell him something will stop... I don't have the answer.. My mom lost her mom to ahlzheimers in 2009 and we lost my grandfather almost a year later to lung cancer, she still cries for her parents and catches herself trying to call them. I hate not being able to help.. All I know to do is be there for him and hold his hand through all of this. |
