| My gelding was just diagnosed with a medial collateral ligament tear in the front foot near the coffin joint. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this injury and wanting to hear input if you have. My vet has recommended strict stall rest for the first 3 months with a little hand walking and then we will recheck him. She said we are probably looking at 6-9 months of rehab. Is there anything else I can do to help this heal? Thanks! |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | My gelding has a subluxed joint there. A sprain so to speak. The vet didn't suspect any tears but I was told no turnout to keep him in the corral. I have him on THE supplements. NutraWOUND and NitrOxide. He has some other issues going on as well, so until I figure it out, I will at least try and get that fixed. |

| a good friend of mine had same issue- ended up she had to do stem cell therapy- her horse is doing much better but I have done some research on this and one thing that I remember is shoes are not good with this so if you can pull the shoes and let the feet get the circulation God intended it should help - and no matter how sad and hard it is DO nNOT turn out- hand walk and lots of you and your horse together time to help with the (jail) time!!! its hard but its for the best

Location: Ohio | I have a family member who also happens to be a great equine chiro. He made me a believer in cold laser therapy for ligament and tendon injuries. It helps with blood circulation (which is why collateral ligament injury's heal so slowly), help healing enzymes get to the injured areas and reduces swelling, redness and heat and in turn reduce pain. It also helps keep scar tissue to a minimum if you start it early enough. I believe there are study's that show faster healing time for bone injuries as well.

Location: Royal J Performance Horses, AZ | about 2 weeks ago my barrel mare was diagnosed with this except it is right at the knee on the outside of the leg. She's not lame at all but it is slightly swollen there with some mild warmth so i've been icing her, when i can and adding poulticing those legs over night. I'm hoping keeping it cool and trying to draw the heat out will put us on the right direction again. |

Location: The Oklahoma plains. | I have had a horse with this recently and his outcome is yet to be determined.
Our vet wanted our horse in shoes for sure for protection. And stall rest was 6 months, folowed by regulated rehab for 3 months. We did an MRI to determine and opted for stem cells. My vet's experience was 50% chance of recovery with no treatment and 80% with stem cells. |

| My horse had a medial collateral ligament tear on her right front foot, it was chronic and fairly large. We did shockwave therapy and a Denoix collateral ligament shoe (I believe this is the thing that helped the most and is a must for this type of injury, you can google it and order them online there are two kinds depending on if your horse has a medial or lateral tear, the wide branch goes under the tear to support the collateral ligament) after we put the shoe on she was much more sound. She was off for a year, but she has come back completely sound and running faster than she ever has so there is hope as long as you give them enough time off and I believe proper shoeing/trimming is critical and also the shoe really helped. My vet had three horses with this injury in his care at the same time and all of them have turned out really well with this protocol. |

Location: Ohio | My horse has a medial collateral tear in his right hoof, what I want to know did your horse have a hard lump on the inside. Up next to the coronet band. Also he is sound when going to the left at all gaits and lame at a trot when going to the right. He was laid off all last winter about 9 months and was completely sound this spring, I took him to 2 barrel races and I am back to square one, any suggestions? |

| My horse was only lame in a left circle at the trot, was completely sound to the right because the tear was medial (inside). If the tear is lateral (outside) then it would be the other way around. My guess is that your horse did not heal fully and tore the ligament again, but I am not sure. My horse did have a lump by her coronet band but it was not visible only felt. We diagnosed her with ultrasound as the tear was high enough up to see it but sometimes you can only see the tear with an MRI if it is farther down in the hoof. |

Location: Ohio | My horse also had an ultrasound and you could see the ligament was torn, I am going to check out the Denoix shoes but should they be put on both front feet? |

| Only the foot with the injury, I left my horse barefoot on her good foot. The shoe is not cheap so you only want to buy one LOL, I shod my horse I think at least 5 shoeing cycles with this shoe, basically the whole time she was laid up, then I was able to go to back to a regular shoe when I started riding her again. |

Location: a secret | This is how mine went.... 6 months complete stall rest hand walking. 30 mins three times a day, time yourself the first day i was like it has to be 30 mins it was 5 mins... lol As long as I did the walking my mare handled the stall very well. I also was in great shape after six months. The next six months small paddock turn out hand walk gradually got on just walked advanced gaits to trot etc. I took a total of 2 years to bring my mare back to competition after I was told she owuld not recover. She has remained sound I do pick and choose where I run her and how often. Great farrier now. It can be done it is a bit of a long haul but it was well worth it for me. Good luck and dont give up! |

| Thank you all for the suggestions. This was diagnosed via MRI because of it being so low in the foot. He had been lame off and on for the past several months so I went ahead and did the MRI and so glad I did. I found a great vet that has treated these injuries before and she is very hopeful of us having a good recovery with time. She did recommend the shoe... I actually just ordered it tonight. I do have a respond laser so I will be using that. My horse has a medial tear on the right and he is lame going to right. He is off a little to the left but nothing like he is to the right. |
