My vet recomended this to a friend for a horse.  I guess it's the dog version of a horse medication.  So it is quite a bit less expensive.  Does any one know much about this, or . . . I'll do a search.  Maybe it's already been discussed.

Definitely a great opinion compared to bute. Keep horses on 1/4 tab once a day for most of the summer. Will take them off when they have a few weekends off. My opinion it is just like ibuprofen for athletes.

And the trick to getting them to eating it - is fig newtons.  I split the pill in half.  We have a mini pony.  I was at the point of putting her down because I could not catch her, could not hide it in apple sauce etc.  My husband's secretary said she hid pills in fig newtons for her horses.  Works like a charm.  That pony eats it up.

There are two strengths of pills, if that's the right terminology! When I was prescribed the smaller pill I gave all of it. The larger pill does need to be cut. I would just drop the pill in my horse's grain and they'd eat it without even noticing it was there. For long-term I would definitely choose Previcox over Bute.

I found a bunch with a search.  I even asked a question back then. Weird, I don't remember.
Friend is giving 1/4 pill, so I guess it's the stronger dosage.  I'm curious for my dog who broke his neck a few years ago.  He does well, but is seriously uncomfortable a lot.  I'm going to ask vet about it for him.

Love it!!  I use Advil for myself when I am on the road and the horses I am hauling get their Previcox. I get sore and I know they do too. I have taken the part of the pill and put it in grain, but my piggies will eat it out of my hand. They don't care. . porkers.

When they have time off the road, I don't feed it to them.

I use 1/4 tablet(57mg) of the large dog which is 227 mg. (because for some reason it's cheaper???) prexicoxx is the dog version of equioxx for horses. It's a cox 2 inhibitor, spacifically targets joint inflamation. And does not effect the intestinal functions like a cox-1 inhibitor (bute) does. I have seen it literally do amazing things to My friends horse who's is a 34 yr old gelding with severe ringbone. He literally went from hobbling about at a walk to loping in a week!! This alone has me sold! I have an older horse with some mild arthritic changes, trying to keep any inflamation at bay, I can tell the difference in him between the adequan injections.if I use it and when I don't.
Side note: I only give it 3 days out. Not daily.

We gave my arthritic dog adequan inj every 3 weeks, helped tremendously.  might check that option with the vet as well.

Great product, just be careful using it long term. We believe CC's kidney stones are a result of having to have Previcox long term. I'd use it again in a heartbeat given what we were dealing with at the time though. The easiest way I found to feed it was to take my hoof pick, create a slit in a carrot or an apple slice and shove the recommended dose of the Previcox in the slit.

I drop the 1/4 tablet in very small amount of water (about 1 teaspoonful) in the old small prescription bottle and shake up and pour it on the grain. Then I don't have to wonder if they slobbered that one little bit out. My Golden gets the full 227mg tablet everyday--otherwise she wouldn't be able to walk.

How long is long term? Just had it prescribed for my mare but vet didn't tell me for how long. . .

I've used it for years on a horse and while she was carrying a foal. Didn't affect them at all and this was all at a vets diagnosis.

Vets recommendation 1/4 pill everyday, they had me do that everyday for 3 months, then started a regimen of everyday for 14 days followed by 3-5 days off depending on how she was doing and back on for 14 days. That was for a little over a year then slowly weaned her off by giving a 1/4 pill (227 gr) every other day except when we were running, for 6 more months. We do also have hard water with a lot of calcium in it which had to be filtered when we got the diagnosis of the stones. The vets at UCD just believe that between her body chemistry and the use of the NSAIDS long term that it was a "perfect storm" for the kidney and bladder stones.

This is correct. I think it's great stuff. It can be given longer term but it can potentially cause stomach ulcers and gastritis.....although less likely. Certainly much more tolerable than bute. Amazing how dogs require so much more for the same effect, but I guess that's due to differences in metabolism of the drug. I like the idea of dissolving it in a small amount of water and pouring over their grain. The Equiox (horse version/paste) is tons more expensive.
