It is official, I will be in Oklahoma in less than two weeks and I am very excited. I will be moving to Moore, OK (I know, tornado town, but it will be home!). I will be bringing my colt out in a few months so that I can take time to get situated. Wondering if anyone could talk to me about the essentials.. recommended vet's, farriers, chiropractors etc. I have been looking around for a place to board, but I think I will do that in person as the prices that I have seen are a bit high compared to where I live now.

Also what kind of shows are there as far as gymkhanas, play days, omoksee's, barrel races etc. My colt will be five next year, and he has got a solid foundation going so I would really like to start him on the patterns. Something just fun, and that we can enjoy and also meet other horse people in the area I am very excited for our future!

There will be barrel racing a plenty in that area.  You could just about go every night of the week during the summer within an hour or hour and a half.

As far as I know we do not have gymkhanas or omoksees.  I've never heard of omoksees.  I'm going to google that. LOL Those words are used somewhere else, but definitely not here. They happen somewhere else.  There are playdays here which I know are similar, but definitely not the same.

You can get to top notch vets in less than 45 minutes in just about any direction.  Most would say look at Oakridge Equine around Guthrie.

Just look right here on BHW in the events section for barrel races.  That would be a great place to start.

There are many open rodeos in central Oklahoma and all over Oklahoma.  Of course there are sanctioned rodeos all over the state too. You could do a google to find some pretty quick I am sure.  I will look online for some links.

Here are some round up club arenas close to Moore..........and some arenas and associations.  These are just the ones with quick easily found websites. There are quite a few more that are very close, but no website found quickly. You can stay busy in Oklahoma.  There are a lot of indoor arenas too.  Didn't google any further for those sites.

How much do the farriers usually run? What are average prices out there for a full set? Same thing with vets.. are they expensive?

Vets and farriers are spoiled rotten in the Moore area ... big horse farms and stallion stations south of Moore and Remington Park Race Track north side of Okla City .. so prices are 2-3 times what you find in cow country .. lol .. of course majority of these horses that are vetted or trimmed//shod belong to private owners and trainers and stud farms let prices run rampant since the owners of the horses are billed for the services.

$40-$80 for a trim and $80-$150 for shoes ...

Vets are obsessed with finding something rare wrong with your horse so their prices are obnoxious ... and long term care seems to be their answer to a lot of things ..

Keep a little note book with you and go to some barrel races and jot down names of farriers and vets you get from other working girls ...

WEATHER ... use mapquest to locate Tuttle, Harrah and Blanchard and use them to draw a circle around Moore Okla .... high traffic north boundary use I-44 ... this is the 40 mile circle that you do not want to live in ... each one mentioned is around 20 miles from Moore ...
If you live a few miles out in the country you will likely find boarding close by for your horse too ... and maybe safer from tornado alley ... safest place during a tornado//bad weather ... bathtub in the house and tack/feed room in the barn ...

HARRAH OKLA has barrel races and board horses .. ALIVE N FIREN stands in Harrah too ...

FYI: Okla is on a government survey system... one mile squares.. ... north and south roads are one mile apart and so are the east and west roads .... once you understand that everything is square it is easy to learn your way around ...most is easy driving .....>>> except for Okla City major roads run at angles and can get confusing to newcomers ... it was surveyed by a drunk surveyor ...

Ardmore Murphey Coliseum has a lot of races ... HERITAGE PLACE SALE is a good time mostly race bred .. 4 big sales per year.... TRIANGLE HORSE SALE in Shawne working horses ... OKLA STATE FAIR COLISEUM big championship barrel races coming in November and December ... BBR and BFA ...
CASINO'S at REMINGTON PARK and biggest is WINSTAR down I-35 almost to Texas Border (THACKERVILLE )

Just watch your speed limits .... every little town has radar traps and make lots of money on fines from out of towners ... ... you will recognize the traps when speed limit drops from 70 to 55-45 on highways or from 45 to 25 in towns ... lol

Regular Stock and Horse trailers require no tags in Oklahoma ...

WELCOME TO INDIAN NATION ... meaning of OKLAHOMA ... First among the resettled tribes were the Choctaw, from whom we get the words...... OKLA HUMMA ......which literally means “red people.” Yes, that's the name we gave the whole state: Red People.

Welcome! I know we have talked but it's exciting you're moving! I pay $35 for trims, $50 for front shoes and $75 for a full set of shoes. I personally haul to West Yukon Animal Hospital for routine care, but if I needed a better care facility I would most likely use Oak Ridge in Guthrie or even OSU in Stillwater.

Barrelhorse, thank you! I guess that is why I have found boarding is so dang expensive? I was quite shocked by the prices, but hopefully I can find something that will suit me better. Yeah unfortunately I am living right smack where the tornadoes hit, it wasn't tell after I got my place that I saw that moore is like.. tornado central, joy! Yeah I was out there in August and the driving seemed pretty simple, as did direction. It seems like everything is connected by a select few highways and if you can get to them, you're golden.

And trailers don't require tags, really? That is kind of strange lol But I won't complain!

Twisted, yes! Thank you :) I guess because now it is set in stone, I just wanted to recap. I wasn't sure when I was going to make it out there, but now everything is finalized and I'm officially coming out there! I am very excited for this new venture :)

Welcome!!! I would love to live closer to OKC! I wish I could be of more help, but I'm not. You'll be in a great location for races and rodeos and good vet care. Enjoy it!

ETA: Trailers don't require tags, but I tagged mine with a private tag since I am frequently crossing state lines. $7/year.

JUST ONE MORE SUGGESTION ...

When you are getting to know your area ... use the following link to go look at some of the best race bred stallions in the world located within 60 miles of you .... headed south on I 35 .... USE MAPQUEST TO LOCATE STUD FARMS ...
Most are very courteous on drop in guests ... after Feb 15th ... mornings will be very hectic at most so drop by in the afternoon .. lol

One stud farm and stallion you must see is CORONA CARTEL AT LAZY E RANCH.. NORTH SIDE OF OKLA CITY AND ARE NEAR REMINGTON PARK WHICH IS ALWAYS FUN .. ... you need to know where they are located due to the many events they put on there ... CC stands for $35,000 ...

Print the link page and write town by stud's name .... APOLITICAL JESS is another at JEH OKLA DIVISION and then TRES SEIS is at their TEXAS DIVISION ...

Makes you remember where you have been and the stallions are magnificent ....

FYI; RACE BRED ARE LOCATED SOUTH TO ARDMORE ............ CUTTER AND REINERS OR SOUTH OF ARDMORE AND ON HWY 377 SOUTH FROM WHITESBORO TEXAS ...

http://www.stallionesearch.com/default.asp?section=7&area=9

HAVE FUN ...

Welcome!!!

There are quite a few of us BB's here that are from Oklahoma. I'm in Shawnee. There are barrel races all year round!! Play days will start winding down with the change in the seasons. Indoor racing is picking up now. There are several series and events within a good 1-1.5hr radius from moore!! There's also lakes and trails throughout the area as well.

Vets-oakridge, EMA, and Yukon are good

Farriers in your area I would recommend is Kevin Sherman

Chiro- Jill Beaty, and there's a vet/Chiro in arcadia. Jill is a barrel racer and sets up at most shows

On Facebook, look up Oklahoma barrel races, NBHA OK5, Running R arena, and central 4D. That should get you started!!! And most of the productions will show up here in events. WELCOME!!!

If you own a cellar, Bring It With you! As nice as it is, I would not live in that state if I didn't have a hole I could dive into. (with room for 2 dogs and a horse)
