| Old farmer folklore says that the moon phase during conception can influence the sex of a foal. Recent studies have shown this is statistically not the case, however the last two foals I have had have followed the 'ol moon rule, and I am waiting to see what number 3 is. The last 3 foals I bred have been conceived during the first part of the full moon, and as predicted, the first 2 were fillies. They also say that a mare is more fertile during the full moon, and my mare has caught easily on the first try with both frozen and fresh. Interestingly, they were also both born on a full moon. Just wondering if others have used or tracked moon phases, and if so, what were the results. I am also interested about how successful the "nail trick" has been for people. My Irish grandparents swore on both these not so scientific theories! |

| I've never heard of the moon phase philosophy, although I think I'm going to have to look it up because it sounds super interesting.
As far as the nail test.... We've used a need and thread, but same concept, and its been accurate the last 5 times! 1 colt and 4 fillies later....  |

You thread a needle and hold it over the mares hip area, with about 6-8 inches of thread between where you're holding the thread, and the needle. You hold it still, and it will start to move, seemingly by itself. If it moves back and forth in a line then it's supposed to be a colt. If it starts to move in a circle, a filly. We always did it in a stall so the wind wasn't blowing. |

The "nail trick" has been dead on for me too. I was at a poultry swap a week ago and saw a little old man doing it to all the chicks because he only wanted pullets! It sounds like total hokum, but it has been right every time for me.. |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I had two mares last year, LBD of each of them was on the 14 & 15th of March last year. One had a colt, one had a filly.
I tried the nail trick. Didn't work.
I tried the which side of the belly is sticking out farther. Didn't work.
I guess I'll just be surprised every year.  |

| Never heard that but I did try the nail trick and it said filly, I just looked up the phase of the moon on the day she was bred and it says filly too so lets hope so! Shes due in a month so I'll have to come back to this thread and update  |

| So interested in this! I sent my horse off last year to be bred. I'm told she is due May 10 -20 so when would she of been bred exactly and what moon phase? I'm so hoping for a filly!! |

The theory is that if you breed from the first quarter moon through the full moon you get a filly and if you breed from the last quarter moon through the new moon you get a Colt. A 14 year study in the UK did show that mares were more fertile during a full moon. When you think about it it makes sense because nature would need more females than males to continue the species. If you Google moon phase calendar, you can plan future breedings and research previous ones. My mare is going to have a filly according to both the moon phase at time of breeding and the nail test. I will let you know if it is right for a 3rd time! |

I have heard of am pm breedings.
Breeding a mare in am before noon will produce a stud.
Later in afternoon produces a filly.
My Dad did this w his stallions.
Before I had my mare bred he ask if I wanted a stud or filly?
Said filly.
My mare was bred about 7 or 8 pm 3 times.
I got my filly :)
I was present. He said we'll see if you get your filly.
He said the semen was more acidy n am.
Now weither true or not it happened.
His mares he bred for fillies and got them.
