I bought a new Circle Y barrel saddle last Sat, and I'm not liking the stirrups it came with. They seem too bulky. Any good recommendations on a new pair? I have attached a few pictures! Thanks!

I also ride in nothing but Nettles. They are expensive to buy new, but I snagged one pair of mine used.

Specifically the barrel racing stirrups from them? I'm on their website now.

I have a pair of the barrel racer and the flat bottoms. Pretty sure both are 1.5" tread width.

I love my Nettles too and all I use of the Nettles is the Halfbreeds.

I don't mean to barge in, but what makes nettles so special compared to other stirrups?

IΒ don't mean to barge in, but what makes nettles so special compared to other stirrups?Β

Good question.

Quality of product, safety (no worries of breaking), balance (no need for rubber bands), lightweight, durable.

And well, I just like them. They work for me. Pleasure horses, reiners, barrel racing; it's all I've used.

They're laminated wood, not just pressed together and glued like other wooden stirrups.  The more layers of wood, the more cushion the stirrup has during impact. Premium: 6 Ply, All Purpose: 4 Ply.

They're easy on your knees, easy to keep on your feet, and last forever. They hold their value and are well made. They are a small family owned company that found a better way to make stirrups that last, rather than make a quick buck.

 Which line and which style?

The Halfbreed stirrup like Roxie runs in is a cross between an Oxbow stirrup and a flatbottom stirrup. It has the sides of an Oxbow and the bottom like a flatbottom stirrup. These stirrups are easy to hold on to because of the tread width and weight.
The barrel style stirrups are basically the halfbreed with a rubber pad. They are more for those people who are used to heavier stirrups who have a harder time keeping up with lighter stirrups.

Since you have never used Nettles, I would recommend the Barrel Stirrups in at least a 2 1/2" tread, if not 3" Tread. You will like the rubber grips coming from an English Background. You will feel safer and more secure at higher speeds with this particular stirrup. And if you don't, you will be able to sell them for what you paid for them. Get a darker wood, people seem to like the dark varnish color better. They are an investment, but you will not be disapointed. Everyone that I have recommended them to have bought multiple pairs of the 3" Barrels or Halfbreeds.

Hmm I've only ever used just regular plain aluminum or rawhide so I guess I don't know what potential difference different stirrups could make.

Each material in stirrups serves a different purpose. Aluminum, steel, wooden, etc all have different benefits and are each better than the other in different situations.
I prefer Nettles or CROOKED Stirrups of Hico. They fit my needs better than any other stirrup on the market.
The Nettles Story is here if you would like to read more in depth.
Benefits: http://nettles-stirrups.com/nettles-stirrups-details/
Story: http://nettles-stirrups.com/history/
YOu can find more info under the stirrup information tab on their wensite.

You also need to take into consideration whether you like close contact stirrups or deep stirrups. How tall a stirrup is really affects the way you ride as well. For example, I order Premium Nettles Line stirrups in a petite size with a 2 1/2" -3" tread. The stirrups don't hit my shins because they aren't as tall ande I don't lose them because they aren't as wide as the regular size. My foot is small and fits better without much room to move side to side while riding.  Much more comfortable for shorter gals like me.

You know buying a ad is just a click away for the ones wanting to sell their stirrups and 10 dollars per ad will be donated to the flood victums so you would be helping out..

 Nettles!

I broke my ankle and these are the only stirrups that don't make it ache after riding all day. They are so light weight! Totally worth the $$

I alerted an admin about the two posts to see if it was "legal" to post things for sale... LOL It's not. PMing someone about items for sale however, is still "legal".

Roxie has better ideas tho. Buy an ad, help a flood victim out!
