I see this often and it makes no sense to me. Thus the post.

"Appendix" tells a person absolutely NOTHING about how a horse is bred or made.

All "appendix" means is that at some point in the past, a relative was bred to a TB and the papers weren't advanced (usually because no ROMs were earned, but occasionally due to laziness).

I have 2 appendix registered horses right now. Both should advance their papers. I have 1 with advanced papers now, she is not appendix. I have another who is over 5/8 tb but she is not appendix and never has been.

Also, while some TBs have a "look", many do not. Sprinting TBs look like high quality QHs. We have 3 TB mares at the house right now. Only one doesn't look like a QH and that is because she is 17+ hands and when she stands on the scale at the vet it just says "over"...she's massive.

Sorry for being long winded...but...Appendix is not a body type, nor is it a good or even decent indicator of pedigree.

I don't completely understand the 'advancing,' and future generations of the 'advanced' horse.

I had a mare:
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/easy+go+misty in foal to the sire:  http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/extra+fire

Both had regular papers.  The resulting filly was sent yellow papers when registered?

But I do understand that 'appendix' doesn't have to do with conformation.  I rode a 2yo TB colt that was a prime hunky dude, looked just like Bully Bullion, seriously.  I have a white papered QH mare who looks very TB.

Are you sure extra fire has regular papers, as I have a grand baby of him, just looked at her papers, on her papers he has an x which means appendix

Just called Aqha extra fire has not been advanced, nor can he be advanced as per aqha

Her dam does not have regular registry papers. Her dam's sire is by a TB. His papers weren't advanced. He produced appendix foals (unless some earned their ROMs and were advanced). Ready Go Misty was not advanced. As a result, all of her foals are appendix also.

If the dam has not been advanced, and the sire has not how did the foal get papers?

My mare ROM'd on the track.  I thought Extra Fire was white papered, but if he was still yellow then that's where it came from.  But I thought he'd ROM'd also for some reason.

I misread the post. Ready Go Misty was appendix. Easy Go Misty has regular registry papers.

Extra Fire is appendix.

My mare ROM'd on the track.  I thought Extra Fire was white papered, but if he was still yellow then that's where it came from.  But I thought he'd ROM'd also for some reason.

ROM alone won't advance one. You have to send paperwork in, + fee, + vet letter saying they have been inspected and aren't a parrot mouth or cryptorchid.

So that is why my newest horse still has appendix papers? He has his ROM from the track. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/royal+red+streaker
This really doesn't matter to me because he's a gelding, but I like to learn new stuff.

After all these years - I wonder if I researched the wrong name or something?  I haven't looked since that filly was registered, but I could swear there wasn't an 'X' registration number.  My bad, somehow.

Yes. It is $50 to advance them + if your vet charges for the letter (mine never have).

This mare is regular registry http://allbreedpedigree.com/olivias+lady

Her papers were advanced before I bought her.  She came with white papers and in foal to Extra Fire.

I ran into this problem with my mare. Bought her as a yearling with appendix papers and never thought to research her dam until 6 years later when I wanted to breed her. By then her dam had died. The last owner's vet never looked at her mouth so I couldn't get a statement from him. I thought about tracking down previous owners, but just decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

And I agree with you on the appendix statement. My mare is so far from the traditional TB look. Honestly, she could double as a plow horse! I had a true appendix mare with advanced papers, and she was big but still built like a QH.
