I have a horse that has tmj problems and the buckles on the headstall I normally use are right near his tmj joint. I saw a lady over the weekend with a single piece of wide leather for a headstall with no buckles. I didn't get a chance to ask her where she got it from. Has anyone seen them anywhere?

How would you adjust the headstall to make it fit if theres no buckles on it?  Sounds like its a homemade headstall that this lady made for her horse .

Talk to a saddlemaker (ore repairman) in your area. They should be able to make you one with an "adjustment" buckle up at the poll....That being said, I sure would want either a brow band OR a one ear to keep ANY bridle in place.

Now that you say adjustment buckle at the poll, I just remember I have a really old headstall that adjust at the poll, these are pretty neat and it does have a brow band.

This lady's was obviously custom. It had some scroll work on it and it was wide. It must have been made just for that bit because I only saw Chicago screws at the bottom and it looked thick and tight enough not to slip off the ears. I had been considering just asking some leather maker to make me a headstall with the cheek pieces shorter so the buckles wouldn't be so close to his joint but if I could find this other headstall it might save me some trouble. Plus I need one to fit a bozo bit. All of my nice headstalls are too big. I looked this lady's name up but she doesn't have a fb page to as her.

I have an old headstall with no brow band and no earpiece, just 3 pieces of leather that I ride in all the time with several types of bits and it never goes anywhere. Just saying. To the poster I would definitely agree you're looking for one with the buckle at the poll.

I bet if you contacted Heritage Brand with your needs, they could make you something.

They make custom headstalls all the time. They have you measure out the headstall your currently use, send them the measurements, and then make the headstall to be the perfect length. If you requested no buckles or maybe buckles that are lower down, I'm sure they could do it.

It may be one of those headstalls that are made like a belt. Yochams in Bartlesville, OKlahoma can make them

You could have one made with adjustment buckles at the bit. It would have to be a bit thinner of leather but should still be plenty strong. I can see in my head what I'm thinking of, whether or not that's clear to anyone else is anyone's guess. I do paracord ones with conways at the bit, just simple ones

There are some headstalls that are made like the cowboy halters. Nylon cord and they tie like a halter to adjust. NRS has them. I think they are Wigwam brand

what about just a simple leather bosal hanger, its not as wide as you saw on that lady's horse but it has no buckles and is adjustable.

Here is one with a buckle only on 1 side. I do not see why you couldn't have a leather person remove the buckle and make it to where you could use rope as the adjuster. I would take the buckle off, put permanent leather rope on the bottom half...keep the holes at the top and use the tie that you would use at the end of the bit to overlap it and secure it in which ever length of hole you would need. This may have only made sense in my head...lol

Another option would be have a headstall made by the Rein Man. I have one that he made and you do all the adjusting right at the bit level. It has like a rein buckle thing on it that always you to tighten or loosen.

I know a lady that had a belt headstall made and they added a browband for her. It looked very very nice when finished also. I bet they could add a single ear piece also. It was custom made at Yochams

There is a gal I am friends with on FB that made a hardware less headstall (the adjustments are made via leather) hard to explain. I sent her a message to get the details

thanks everyone for the replies.  I appreciate the help...Margoannrodeo...would still like to hear from your friend.  I have found the lady that had the headstall in question and I have got her number now and will call her tonight.
