| Is it just me and all the creeps in the Southeast out and about in full force this summer? That guy in TN murdering that woman and then eating parts of her. The horses in FL being injected with gasoline. I can't fathom how anyone can do such awful things. I feel bad getting up to pee when my dog is asleep on me because I don't want to wake her. |

| When I was a kid, my friend and i would run along behind the car as my mom was pulling away and see how long we could touch the bumber. One time my friends fingers got caught on the bumber of the old Ford Pinto. It was three blocks later that someone pulled in front of my Mom, making her stop the car. Thats when she found out she had dragged him three blocks down a freshly chipped asphalt road. His knees were never the same. I feel bad for the pony that was dragged, I bet it was a real mess. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | When I was working for a vet we were called by the county over to come out to pretty much the same call. A guy had drug a pinto colt (yearling or lanky two year old) for several hundred yards behind his pickup while "halter breaking" it. He lived though. Took almost two weeks before he could get up. We doctored on him, and flipped him a few times a day to keep him from getting sores. When he was finally able to get up, he couldn't stay up for long, but did better each day. The sheriff's office of the neighboring county paid me to board him at my barn while the guy was charged and tried for animal cruelty. He was adopted out after that by my boss, though they never could ride him. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I usually tie mine to the bumper of the farm truck if they get loose or if they are way out in the pasture, however I barely go but about 5 miles an hour and they can easily pull the rope through to get free if they need too.
In all honesty and please don't flame me for this, maybe he couldn't see the pony and didn't know it fell... However at the same time How could you be going so fast you didn't know... Just thinking out loud... I'm curious to see the results of the case.
Animal Control was notified and put the pony down... That means he or his mother had to have called for help right?
Hoping this was a tragic accident and not intentional...

I wish I could give people the benefit of the doubt like you're doing. Its a sick world out there and although accidents happen... I doubt this was an accident and the fact of the matter if you do something like this you better be DARN sure you're watching every step.... 100 yardss?!!?!!!

All the more reason not to tie it to the bumper of the truck where it could not be seen and/or to not get over 2 to 3 miles per hour it you do such a thing. The video shows the bumper of the truck. Most of us have seen horses being ponied by 4 wheelers and sometimes by people sitting on the tailgate of a truck holding the leadrope and having the horse walk/trot behind - saw this a lot when we used to go to youth world - but there was always someone watching the horses who had the ability to drop the lead rope if need be for the safety of the animal. I will say I am extremely proud that our sheriff and his department responded and did not dilly dally about charging this jerk. Currently, in our state, there is a bill in committee that would make animal cruelity a felony. Will be watching and supporting that bill.

It is hard for to grasp too Irunonfaith. We have had a string of animal neglect cases here where animals had to be seized. Even scarier is that we have had abuse cases of bulls being shot in their pastures and dogs being shot.
I do not know this jerk, his family or anything about him. I will be very interested in seeing how this develops.
BTW I have come to realize that there are vast differences in the way things are done in different areas of our country. While some people have 5 to 6 acre horse farms some have 100s and 1000s of acrea horse/cattle farms. Some know how to deal with their livestock (such as you) and some have no clue such as this jerk. So no flaming from me for your way of doing things. :) |

LOL that's too funny.
I used to think I had thick skin until I joined barrelhorseworld
WIth what has been going on we have rethought our way of doing things. Most of our larger pastures have road frontage. We now put everything in a smaller pasture with no road frontage at night as this seens to be when the shootings happened. We don't let our dogs run free unless they are back in the woods with us. Otherwise they are in the house are out in a kennel when we are home. School is out now and unfortunately crime always seems to pick up in the summer months. Truthfully, I have always said a little prayer of thanks each morning and night when I see all our horses accounted for, standing, and healthy. |
