Location: Gainesville, TX | I generally prefer running breds but I really like this stud horse I saw at the Timed Event Championships today, Berts Sonny Dee, ridden by Trell Etbauer.
He steer trips, hazes, ropes calves, and team ropes. 16 year old strawberry roan, around 15 hh, reasonably stout, maybe 1200 lbs.

Location: Aubrey, Texas | Love, love, love Bert horses! My horse, Smoke, is out of a full sister to Sugar Band Bert. When I bought him, Mother wasn't able to get out to see him so I showed her a picture of him. I said, "Doesn't he have a pretty, long hip?" Her eyes got a faraway look and she said, "He got that from Bert." She knew those old horses up-close and well and really liked Bert. My first "real" horse was by Flit Bar and out of her Bert mare.

Location: Gainesville, TX | Clover, do you know more about the sugar band Bert? Any info you could share I'd appreciate. I saw this stud work and was impressed. Got some pics and video too. I'm thinking about a roping or dogging prospect for my husband.

Location: Aubrey, Texas | oija, I'm sorry but I don't know the horse personally, or by reputation. BUT, he's got a double dose of Bert on the top side; also, a good dose of Sugar Bars and Leo. He's actually got Sugar Band three times in his pedigree- Saralindo was by him. Someone who is better in math than I am can figure the % of Sugar Bars. And before anyone says that it is too far back to matter, I will say that I have seen "buck" pass down six generations, so I don't know why good qualities can't do the same.
My horse is Doc O'Lena bred on top, so what speed he has- and he does have some- comes from the Bert side. He's about 15.2, big, strong boned, and has that pretty hip I bragged about. I would take a pasture-full just like him! I'm not raising colts anymore, but if I was, I wouldn't hesitate to breed to Etbauer's horse. I love the Sonny Dee bar horses and Truly Truckle on the bottom side would add some speed, too.
Smoke is the horse in my Avatar-

| I loved the Red Sonny Dee mare I used to ride. She was so smart, BUILT, and had a good amount of speed. She was also very versatile, I used her for every discipline from barrels to halter to english pleasure and she could do well at it all. He has nice older blood |

This is my Sonny Dee Bar gelding exactly. Good looking, big bodied, athletic, dirty bucker.
I will say I am planning to test him for PSSM, I've heard SDB is a suspected carrier, but he has a bad attitude about everything in general so I'm not sure that is the problem.
He has never tied up, and the diet change hasn't helped. |

Location: Aubrey, Texas | Sonny Dee Bar went back to Midnight twice on his bottom side, so they came by the buck honestly. One of the most talented horses I ever owned was a little mare who was Oklahoma Fuel/Sonny Dee Bar. Fortunately for me she didn't get the buck gene! |

The mare I rode could be witchy, but she would never buck or rear. I could put anyone on her and she would plod around for them. Heck, a little girl slow loped her through a pee wee pattern, then I turned around and won 2D on her.
But we also had hormone implants in her, and that made a major difference in her attitude near the end of the show day. She used to just click during a pleasure class and take off running, and the implants stopped that. |
