Location: Georgia | What saddle pads do you recommend for thin/racey type horses with HIGH withers? The saddle I'm using for her is a Corrientte.

Location: lone star state | I'm a 5 star fan with any saddle/ horse combination, they make a pad to fit a variety of needs and they are amazing in my opinion! |

Location: Stuck in a cubicle having tropical thoughts | I have a Tod Slone pad that is somewhere between 3/4" - 1" and a Slash W that is 1' - 1.5". I bought them both used years ago off this site. I really like both of them. I used to have a 16H gelding that was very high withers. I used Tod Slone with him. RIght now my mare is 15.1H and she's a thinner, racey with what I'd say mid-high withers. I've used both pads with her and they both work.
I've seen the 5 stars in person a couple times and my mom has one and I think they are very nice but If I got one for the higher withers I'd probably get one a little thicker. |

Both great pads that will last a long time but don't have the top line contour that the 5 Star does. My TS pad constantly pulled on my horse's withers. Not trying to knock either brand, just pointing out style differences. |

Location: In my own little world | My 5 star lost it's firmness. I was pretty disappointed. I replaced it with the Pro Ortho close contact pad and love it. My high withered horse is ridden with a Three Forks Saddlery pad. It is awesome for his withers!

| I try to end up in a 5 star with everything and have several thicknesses - they go up to 1 1/8", I think if you feel you need something thicker than that you might take a look at a different saddle that fits a little narrower.
I have a CSI for minor saddle fit issues, for example I know my saddle fits my gelding but he's been off all winter and has no top line, I'll start in the CSI until he starts to shape up again. I find the CSI makes my saddle roll though unless I really crank the cinch down as hard as I can, and I hate doing that. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I love love my 5 Stars they are all I use, I have more then a few in different thickness cause I have more then one horse that I ride, I have good fitting saddles with 5 Stars under them. I love how they contour to my horses back and never get tight over the withers.  |

Location: Georgia | I have a friend that's going to let me try their wade and 5 star, but until then I picked up a BioFit pad by Classic. It has the front end built up. I tried it on her yesterday and it seemed to help sit the saddle off her withers more. Hopefully that will work until I can try the others. |

Interesting. Mine is about 10 years old at this point so they could have changed a bit. I do know that they have new owners. I've been curious in trying Saddleright pads and maybe a CSI but I have no need at this point with my horse situation. |

I've seen many 5 Star pads lose firmness too quickly. I've also seen them "pill" and pull apart especially the ones dyed for color.
This is what I've been told: 5 Star does use grade F11 or F10 wool which is great, but they use less wool per pad than their competitors who also use the F11 or F10 wool.
This makes the competitors pads appear more "dense" and the 5 Star appears to be more light and flimsy due to the weight and density (overall amount of wool) for each pad. |

| I loved my 5 Star, but I REALLY love my CSI.
I have one of those racey, tall-withered mares and I could not use my 5 Star on her with my Corriente because all the thicknesses I tried were either too thin and let the saddle sit too low in the front and pinch or they were too thick for my preference.
My 5 Star was perfect for my cowy mare whose saddle I had custom-fitted to her.
I recently got a CSI and have found it to be MUCH more forgiving for a saddle fit that is close-to-perfect, but not quite there.
The cut is excellent on my racey, high-withered mare because it is contoured to stay wayyy off the withers. She's never felt so fluid in any other set up than with the CSI pad. |

Location: My Own Little World | My two cents lol We have a CSI, a BestEver, and a Corrector in our trailer. I really do like the quality of all 3 and we ride everyday. My daughter does all the rodeo events that girls do and I barrel race only. We have 3 horses with 3 different types of backs. My favorite by far is the Corrector. It is made to be customized to each horse and let me tell you that Len Brown is a HUGE source of information on saddle fit. Love his leather care products too. The CSI is a similar idea to the Corrector but no way to customize it to the horse. I really like the service and quality from the CSI pad folks. They also come in different configurations for your needs. |
