| What isthe best hoof hardener to help a horse transition to barefoot??? I have one horse I don't run much anymore and its just not worth keeping shoes on him. I have rickens but is there something better to really get those feet hard?? Thanks!!! |

| I used Rickens and tried and tried to get my gelding's soles tough. Vet finally told me to forget it. He had more of a Thoroughbred hoof and he was never going to have tough soles. I figured he would toughen up in time but I never could get him there. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | I have a horse I tried to transition years ago and couldn't get it done. I've had a Natural Balance shoer, shoeing him and he ended up moving back North. I had another farrier come out and pull his shoes and told him not to touch the sole of his foot and he is doing great. The NB farrier allowed the sole to build up and get a sole callous. Problem is now solved. |

| Thanks all! I already have rickens but I might get some dura sole or terpentine and start NOW the week before we pull shoes.. His pen is nice and soft so that may or may not help. But it would be great if he could go barefoot from now on. |

It also helps to pull the shoes and not touch the foot and wait a week before trimming. |

| Sole thickness will have some to with it, but I noticed a bigger more immediate difference in their comfort when we put a good mustang roll on the wall. If that isn't done adequately then each step puts pressure on the wall and it's the equivalent of jamming your fingernail and peeling it back, very painful, especially with thinner walls which come will develop after years of wearing shoes.
With the exception of bigger rocks and sharp gravel all of ours were quite comfortable once the roll was done. One that was probably barefoot for a number of years before we tried shoeing him this summer is already sound even on gravel, and another that doesn't have quite the concavity in his feet yet is getting there but sound on all other surfaces. We had about a week were they'd each lost a shoe so we just pulled the other ones and the new barefoot trimmer coming out, we've got 4 barefoot now that wore shoes most of the year up until this fall. Night and day after a good trim. |

Agree! Gateway has the best stuff. I used Su-Per sole freeze for a thin soled horse I had, and it worked great. Wear protective gloves, it will harden your fingers. It came in a little bottle with a squirt nozzle- I'd dribble it on and scrub it in with a toothbrush. |

I love Gateway, I know that Flit uses their supplements too. I love the Sole formula, I pour a tiny bit into a small jar and use a tiny brush to brush it on to my horses soles and any left over I use a little funnel and pour back into the bottle, lol, I dont like to waste it at all.. |
