I have had my mare almost a year now. People I bought her from always used 1cc of ace on her to just take the edge off. She absolutely LOVES her job , or ANY JOB you throw at her. SHe was a world class cutter, reiner, team roping, and barrel horse. I just used their method ( she is 12) and used a little ace couple hours before a run. WELL........ this past weekend I didn't use any ace on her. I actually totally forgot until it was to late! LOL I can def see why they used it on her. WHen she knew it was her time to go to work, she was pretty much crazy.... but not in a bad way... lol Like she didn't want to wait her turn in the holding area, after each run before her she wanted to blow in there and go to work... SHe just gets so darn excited about working.. which is a good thing.. but she burns a lot of energy doing it. She went from a " Push" style, hope you don't sit early, hope she gives you a half inch extra room around each barrel to a FREE RUNNER with absolutely beautiful turns... I really really like how she runs with no ace! So I have a choice, let her be and deal with her being obnoxious before a run knowing she will go in there and make a smoking run when she does compete, or find something to help calm her just a bit but KEEP THE STING she has on the pattern. Is there anything out there that will keep that free running sting but help her in the few minutes before she runs?? I actually DONT warm her up at barrel races.. THe moment you saddle and put her boots on to walk over to the arena she is MORE THAN warmed up on her own!! LOL I know there are a ton of pastes out there, but I don't want something that is going to over calm her OR something that will " Help her focus". She does NOT need help to focus, her pattern is beautiful. Once you let her do her job its perfect and she makes NO MISTAKES on account of her getting revved up before she runs. Thanks!

I would just stay off of her until a couple riders before your turn.  If you still want some chemical help, I prefer guanabenz over ace.

Are you sure we aren't riding the same horse??? LOL!! I don't do warm ups on my OTT mare, I saddle her and then pony her around about an hour before then just let her chill at the trailer. I don't get on until I absolutely have to. Definitely don't stand up close unless I have to and I just deal with her being a nut. She is the type that when you get on it's time to work and she doesn't understand that there are others that need to go first. At home she can ride fine and relaxed. I did add via calm and Ashwaghanda (sp) root to her daily feed. It helps my mare with anxiety. It didn't take any of the run out just helped with the nerves before we run.

Sounds like we are riding the same horse! LOL And She was the same horse I posted about before asking for bit advice cause she was SO RATEY and broke. LOL I think on ACE she just doesnt react the same etc so thats why she was so TURNEY. anyway, It was actually funny I went into my runs this weekend thinking KICK KICK KICK all the way all the way.. and , um, well, she didn't need it. lol She FLEW.

I do have some curost Ashwanga , I will ad that. I bet it works!!

Some places might be difficult, but I would warm her up away from the arena, maybe use a different bit and keep boots off to keep her relaxed, then bit/boot her up and just lead her to the arena and jump on before you run. As long as she isn't being stupid about it all and disrespectful to you, I'd let her do her haha. It sounds like she is a business type horse and I've got several cowbreds/cutters that are the exact same way. I've also entered pole classes or other different events and just went slow to almost "score them" in the arena too, if you want to actually make her a little less anxious about running, but from your description, I'd just leave her be.

Yep I have another horse on the B1, cause hes been ran so much befor he came to me and he needed to learn to relax some and its been real helpful, hes still a bit nervous at times but hes learning that hes not going to get his legs ran off everytime I saddle him up. I use Magnesium 5000 too for body soreness if any, but it works on the calming to.

Its takes a while for it to really get in their systems I say maybe in a week are two just depends I guess on the horse, mine still get nervous on it but it has made a difference, hes a bit more relax I dont go barrel racing hardley anymore and have never ran this one horse since I have had him, but when I did saddle him he would get really nervous like he knew what was coming but the more I ride him out here hes gotton better, but when I take him to my riding arena and the barrels are set up he really gets nervous but as time has gone by hes better, so I keep him on the Crumbles, he dont get all jiggy and sweat like he use too, poor fella.

Yikes where did you find that price? You can get 1 packet for $7.50. I give it 3 1/2 hours before Im supposed to run my horse and it takes the edge off without making them dopey. If I run 4 times a month, thats $30.

I looked on Valleyvet. Says to give 2 packets a DAY for horses over 1100 pounds. And it was like 12 bucks a dose.

My horse is similar to yours as well.  As hes gotten more sure of himself he's become more of a handfull a few riders out from our draw.  I also can't warm him up anywhere near the gate as he feeds off the horses thundering down the ally.
he is a completely different horse at home. Low headed and lazy.  just gets majorly amped up in certain situations.
I am trying calming cookies for the first time this weekend, I'll let you know how they work!
I have also debated warming him up less because I always ride him WAY TOO MUCH at the run trying to prevent that anxious energy and it is probably hurting our run ultimately.  That energy though! Makes me feel like if I don't warm up for ever i'm going to get Launched during our run.
May have to try and use it instead of wasting it!

I would try the B1 as mentioned. I would stay away from Magnesium in CA. Plenty in the hay and water there already.
