Please dont' tell me to call a vet...it aint hapennin now.

I am in the path of Irma, I'm good boarded up have water we are ready.

However, my very old Blue Heeler who has arthritis and is blind but has never been upset by storms has begun stressing.  We are moving things and bringing things in, and he is totally blind and I know that's confusing for him.  I have given him his Previcox and will daily through the storm.
But I don't know about the stressing.  Can I give ace to a dog if necesary??  He weighs 60 lbs.  Any one know?  Mostly I'm going to hold him when things get bad.

I have xanax but I have no idea if that works for dogs or has the opposite effect.  One eye was damaged and sometimes it buggs out a bit.  I also have atropine.  Doesn't that help with eye pain.

Thank you for answers. I have to go back out.  I'm making sand bags now and it's raining so I won't have phone with me.  I'll check back later.

I'm about 10 or 12 hours from the bad part.

Also, I'm stuck with what ever I have...everything for 2 counties is closed down and some evacuated.

Thanks, he sleeps with me anyway, but the shirt idea is good.  I have vet wrap and might use that for wrapping around a shirt.  I'll keep it minimally tight.

You can give ace, but be watchful of over heating. Or you can give him some valerian if you've got any. But he's probably freaking out because the barometric pressure is dropping. Dogs are smart like that.
Good luck.

He went out to the pond with me to make sand bags and he swam a bit and then started digging with me!  hahahahaha, I had to laugh.  I know he was helping me.

The exercise seemed to settle him a little.
I'll keep checking back
Thanks for the prayers!

Will he kennel somewhere quiet until you're done with prep?

No help on the meds, just prayers and good thoughts for you're safety.

I have one of those THUNDER JACKETS that works well so the tight sweatshirt should help. It works like someone holding them

I have a large pound puppy who after 10 years is still scared of thunder and storms.  I have worked with him alot and he is better but...  The best thing I can do for him is don't do anything different.  Always keep your voice calm.  Literally make fun of him when he is scared instead of your first instinct to grab him up and hold him.  After years it has worked.  It has made a big difference and he is not so scared anymore.

That makes me feel so much better for you and him

My Husky gets hot spots occasionally and I have to give him Benadryl---does make him sleepy. . . .

I was going to suggest benadryl also.

I'm good, and Beastie is good too!!! Grew up in Miami, been through hurricanes....I don't want tongonthrough last.night again!Beastie (my heeler) seemed to settle down once we were all in and done. Even the worst parts and there were many, he seemed to be fine if I made sure he was right beside me. We have a ton of shingles on the ground the tar paper held and Norwood showing through so we're good. Trees down, no power of course some fences down but the house and all the animalsnhere good!My one mare is a tad jumpy...wind picked up some this afternoon and she jumped about 3 ft. In the air.My cell/internet coverage is spotty but wanted to post. I did give him a benadryl when we had a window try to blow in...spent an hour holding it in place from the I side till hubs finally found the wood that blew off. He had to go out and drill it back in, but it held the rest of the storm. I'll check later when I have more cell service. Hope all the other FL bbs.did as well!

Blind or not he is going to sense your anxiety. I could feel it in your post. I like the idea of the thundershirt or wrap some sort of shirt around him. Do you have an alarm clock that makes a tick tick noise? That does wonders for puppies, I wonder if it would help settle an older dog? Good luck with him and stay safe. I miss my heeler, still say he was the smartest and neatest dog I have ever owned.
