how do you like them? Size? Wood or metal sides?? We don’t have any natural shade in our pastures and right now just have a rundown small shelter for a little shade that we salvaged from what previous owner left. Would like to build something bigger and 3 sided so if those horses are out during storms they will be more protected from wind blown rain etc as in the tropical storm yesterday lol

3 sides made of metal, lined with wood on the inside in case they kick, tall so they have good ventilation.

Mine is the exact same. Metal frame, metal sides, bottom lined with plywood. It's 20x20 with the opening on the east side. That way the north winds are blocked, as well as the heat from the afternoon sun in the west.
This is all I have, so they come and go as they please.

Me too on the metal lined with wood. I will say mine use theirs mostly in the summer heat to get out of the bugs and sun. Otherwise they are butts to the storms out in the middle of the pasture. Unless its like a cold rain I never see them use it to stay dry.

I have a 2 sided metal run in. It was 3 but I knocked out a wall.
Back wall faces the north.
The two open sides face the late afternoon sun so if water get in them it will dry quicker and not make a swamp.

Ours is metal with a wood liner 1/2 way up on the inside. It is also on metal skids so we can move it to a different pasture or if we need to clean out under it with a tractor. It is nice to be able to move it because this winter we had to change up the dry lot situation and needed a run in for both lots so we moved it to a more useful location for that project.

If you have metal sides, you better make sure that if a horse happens to get a leg (or legs) onder the bottom that the tin will not cut them. I recently bought a broodmare who was ruined by getting her front legs under some tin and getting cut badly. All she has done her whole life is have babies because of this serious injury.

We use a two sided carport. It was significantly cheaper for us to buy one and have them put it up, then for us to buy the lumber, sheeting, and they only had an hour or two of putting it up. We did have to cover the bolts on the anchors with tape due to a brilliant horse...

We have not put a wooden bottom on the lower part of it yet, but it is on the to get done list. Another option out there

Kay D racing, that is super nice. Everyone, what are the measurements on your sheds?? I was thinking 16x16 but man thats going to be expensive, 12x12 would be a lot more affordable.

These carports are great …

Pricing in tx/ok

8Hx12WX18L $695 INSTALLED ..

add $100 for each foot added in height ..
10 ft high … $895 installed ..

You can add 5ft lengths to 25ft very cheap too ..
then line it with panels and if needed split it up
for two 12x12 stalls .. or one foaling stall.
or even for feed storage

Drag some dirt up for a level building pad
one ft higher than your pasture .. prevents flooding

Winds and tornados are common here …
I have never seen one of these damaged.

And for God's sake … don't put it out in the middle of
a pasture or lot and have to wade out to it … lol

Think about having front side even with your fence line
so you can do a gate on fence or open side of building so
you can just walk into the building

When we bought our property in sept of last year there was nothing on it for the horses. We had a local guy put up a run in for us. We had it built with intention to finish it off to a 4 stall barn (which we did this spring) But all winter they just had a 3 side run in. Open side to the west. Tin exterior, wood interior.
You can sort of see it in this pic. One stall is our feed room the other was theirs. (its now finished into a 4 stall barn or id get a better pic)

I just use Noble shelters. They’re 12x12. Wood siding and metal frame. Plus, they’re easy to move if you need to (like if you were to move to a new property).

Here's what I posted on the "budget barn" thread:

I just had a 3-sided lean-to brought in and anchored. It is 12 X 24, colored tin and wood-lined on a pole frame. Built, delivered to the house and anchored it was $3540.

https://www.backsandbarns.com/

I priced a "kit" from a local lumberyard and it was going to be $1900 for a 12 X 20 but I decided I didn't want to spend every weekend for the next month building it.

You have to be careful with carports because the metal is typically weaker and not designed to withstand impacts from livestock. So if you go that route, it's very important to reinforce the bottom where animals come in contact with it
