| we were at a race a few weeks ago and a little girl was riding bareback, ended up on the ground her horse got his front leg through his reins and flipped over sereral times before anyone got to him, well he dented the front fender and the fender in the box on a new 2015 dually pickup and his shoe left a big groove down another car also. What happens with insurance or whos responsible? |

| I agree, it amazes me what I see parents letting their kids do. I was at a race a couple of weekends ago and a 10ish age girl was sitting on her horse bare back and backwards, riding him around in the barn with a halter. It was very hot so riders were using the isles of the barn to exercise their horses and get out of the heat. The girls mom was in the barn and saw several riders whose horses were on the muscle and getting ready to run have to ask the little girl to please watch where she was going. Mom never said a word to her. The barn is not the normal place to warm up but it was an unusually hot day. |

| I would think that the parents would be responsible also. Just never gave it any thought, and things do happen. Thinking of checking into our coverage just in case our horse got loose or whatever else could happen. |

Location: Displaced Iowegian | Depending on what state and location of the accident, most states have enacted the Equine Liability Law which protects associations, arena owners, sponsors, etc from liability. It would inherently fall to the horse owner for responsibility but even that could be doubtful. In some states, they have added additional wording to even exclude their liability. |

| You make the claim through your own insurance company and let your insurance company fight it out with whomever holds the liability. That is the point of having insurance. |

Location: on a horse | Not being as bad as this sounds, but I have had 2 different horses dent 2 different trucks in my past and if at a public place you are SOL! As the person with the horse causing the damage in no liable. IF however you get hit by a responsible party, they can claim it on the home owners ins and have it fixed. Just speaking from experience in TX |

Location: Buffalo, TX | Years ago, I was at a rodeo in Hennessey and my trailer was parked in line with the others....belive it or not, 2 kids who parents worked in the concession stand tied their horses to each side of a dumpster and it spooked the horses and here they came...both horses dragging that dumpster towards all of the trucks...I think the front of 3 trucks got hit before a roper cut the reins...mine was one of the trucks...I just had to let my own insurance pay for it...
Second story...I was at a barrel race and a girl's horse ran off with her back through all the trailers...here she comes right for my trailer full speed, the horse tries to stop and slides to the ground and hits my RV door (I had a 4 Star at the time)...the girl gets thrown right under my trailer...horse and girl are ok but my door is dented...I let it go...$hit happens... |

| I haven't had anything happen to my rig but a friend's got hit by a spooked horse at a barrel race. It dented the fender and broke the back window. The horse's owners got it taken care of through their insurance. |

I just wanted to say that reading your stories, especially the second one scared me......I am glad that no one was hurt in either. |

| When at a barrel race a horse double barrel kicked and dented my mom's brand new truck. The owners were responsible and they ended up paying for it (or there insurance did).
I would go after the owners. |

This is so agravating. This is why I say it is way more dangerous to warm your horses up at a barrel race than to actually make a run. What are parents thinking? |

Location: Golden Gulf Coast of Texas | I was at a barrel race sitting in stands waiting for my class later in the day. Heard a huge commotion and turned around to see my 4 yr old rearing up on my trailer. Literally, her front feet were on top and left prints. I had her saddled and she was chewing on the stirrup and got it stuck in her mouth. By the time I got down there a guy cut her loose and then she just ran backwards. Just as she heard me call her name she stopped but not before taking out the dual wheel cover on the truck parked next to me. Then she just let me walk up and get the stirrup out of her mouth and she acted like nothing had happened. I gave the people my insurance info and they took care of it. I never even thought about the liability laws, just took responsibility for the issue. |

| The horse owner is responsible.
This is what equine liability insurance is for. When you leave your property with your horse, and it causes damage, having a liability policy with that horse listed is what covers your behind in situations just like this.
Anybody who leaves their property with their horse should have an equine liability policy; heck, even if your horse never leaves the property, you should have an equine liability policy. |

Location: Texas | The horse owner should take responsibility! Doesn't always happen though.
I was at a rodeo a few years ago and had gotten there early to park away from everyone. Last minute barrel racer shows up and parks real close and ties her horses close to my new truck. I mean they can touch my fender. I was fixing to back up a little just as she took one horse away and rode off. The horse left behind starting having a fit and kicked the side of my truck. When she came back I told her what happened she says oh yeah he does that sometimes! Then why did you park so close to me and then leave him there throwing a fit while you ran!!!!
She gave me insurance info ( home owners was supposed to cover, not auto policy) but she would never answer them to make a statement other than the conversation she had with them as I was standing there so it never got fixed. I still see her name in rodeo placings and one day hope she gets repaid by karma
Hope the kids parents do the right thing |
